District Court Upholds Designation of Critical Winter Habitat for Piping Plovers Along Cape Hatteras National Seashore

In an opinion that goes against off-road vehicle interests along Cape Hatteras in North Carolina, a federal judge has ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service properly designated critical winter habitat for the piping plover, a threatened species of shorebirds.
Judge Royce C. Lamberth, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, held that the Fish and Wildlife Service properly considered economic impacts, special management considerations, and off-road vehicle regulations when it set aside 2,053 acres in North Carolina’s Dare and Hyde counties — including parts of Cape Hatteras National Seashore — as critical habitat for the diminutive shorebirds.

The deal also includes five luxury-home sites in Colorado that he bought for $2.7 million and that have long been coveted by the National Park Service for their scenic value and because they provide habitat for the sage grouse.

Here’s a hot job tip for lovers of the great outdoors. In an otherwise stagnant job market, the U.S. National Park Service is hiring, reports CNNMoney.com.
If you’ve always wanted to be a park ranger, your chances of landing that coveted gig right now are pretty good: More than half the positions in the Northeast will be vacant in the next five years, said Chief Ranger Jill Hawk. In particular, urban parks —

Over the summer, the NPS recruited students at urban colleges for summer gigs that could lead to full-time work. Students at Temple University in Philadelphia and at San Antonio College in Texas spent 12 weeks earning up to $16 an hour in the hopes of landing a $50,000-a-year gig as one
of 1,500 armed law enforcement rangers when they graduate.
