Park Rangers are so stupid instead of putting the new nests in a box and taking them across the street on the sound side where they would be safe, they leave them there to be run over or killed. Its the environmental way....
Early one morning we had a very wet snowfall. The snow was sticking to everything. Knowing of a copse of holly trees in the Jamaica Bay bird sanctuary, I thought I could get some great close-up pictures of holly leaves and berries with snow on them. When I got to the parking lot there were cones blocking it off, but there were tire tracks going into the lot. I parked outside the cones and walk up the the visitor's center. Inside were a group of 20-30 people decked out in their best LL Bean accouterments. I also noticed open wine bottles, wine glasses and goatskins being passed around (about 8 AM). I was informed that the sanctuary was closed due to the shut down. When I asked what they were doing there I was told it was for the Winter Bird Count (Audubon Soc. sponsored). Now I know this area very well, so I went and parked in another public lot and took a little used path into the sanctuary. After walking about a half hour during which the snowfall stopped, I spent about four hrs. taking photos. I then decided to approach the visitor's center unseen. This was about 1 PM. The sounds of music and voices were coming from the building and the cars in the parking lot were still covered in fresh snow as were the tracks they made on entering. There were NO footprints leaving the building except the ones to the parking lot. These “nature lovers” had NEVER LEFT THE BUILDING!!!!
This incident and the one I posted up-thread should be remembered whenever some gov’t. bureaucrat cites the numbers of birds in a given area.....THE STATISTICS ARE A FRAUD!!!!!
