I have. I got along fine without Google Maps in DC. And anyone that depends on Google Maps exclusively for anything is an idiot.
You don’t need Google, but you do need a map. Unless you somehow deposited yourself directly in downtown and just stuck to the Smithsonian Mall. Which you can do if you wisely perused said map and chose the best routes to get down there.
Or if you used the subway/Metro, which is great.
DC is horribly, horribly laid out. Rectangular grid overlaid with spoke grid, split in “sections” by the Mall. As a native MDer of 40 years with much experience there - and good at spatial concepts and maps as well as sense of direction - I can attest to that.
