Posted on 08/19/2010 9:43:14 AM PDT by JoeProBono

So I bought this Mosin and sure enough the bolt sticks to the point that you have to slap it your palm hurts.

Reading up, I discovered this YouTube "solution" which seemed rather labor intensive.

I love blogs too.

Sometimes I’ll print them out and put them under my pillow.

Simple green...
Ya know, I have never used that on a firearm. I was told that it can actually undo the "curing" inside the bore. It's great for cleaning oil off a windshield when you are doofus enough to leave the oil cap off the rocker covers and drive off.
Best results for me had been using Hoppe's solvent for the parts, Sweet's 7.62 on the copper fouling inside the bore (flush it with the Hoppe's), and Kroil for final assembly and lube.
That plus a few incantations, smudging the area with burning sage(Frankincense and Myrrh if you are Catholic), and a little chicken blood.

You can usually find Mosin Nagants for $60-120 depending on where you are. If you can find them locally, you’re better off doing that so you can pick the one you want and not pay all of the transfer fees.

20 gauge wire brush, electric drill, Hoppes # 9.

Works like a charm.

I’ve seen a Mosin do-it-yourself video where removing just 1 coil off of the firing pin spring will also help that problem.

ANY residual cosmoline is likely to be a very thin, almost un-noticable shellac-hard film on the inside of the chamber. After a couple of shots this cosmoline heats heats up, softens and becomes very sticky.

As others have mentioned, do all you can to assure that there isn’t *any* trace of cosmoline left in the chamber or on the bolt.

This method has done wonders for my Mosins.

The best cosmoline remover I ever used was Xylene. It’s a stripper you can get at Lowes. I put some on a rag, swiped the metal or wood and it removed it all. Soaking the parts in it cleaned them with very little effort.

I cleaned some 03 Springfields and didn’t notice any deterioration of the metal or wood caused by the xylene.

I once had to degrease some former Mexican army Mausers and G3s that had been stored in a quartel in which no official issue cosmoline was available. So they used tar. They didn't rust, but it took both a steam cleaner and xylene to finally get the rock-hard mess off. A couple of them actually shot pretty well once stripped and lubed.

I've also been known to use the hot water spray at car washes, with two provisos: first off, rinse the weapon in clean tap water once you get home, as salt is added to the water in come commercial car washes as a water softener to promote foaming. second, if you hit the *hot wax* button, the bolt and action will be a bit sticky thereafter. Especially Mosin-Nagants.

Mosin's have a reputation in some circles for getting a bit sticky once they get warm. I wonder how that happened.
