Our problem is that there has been a revolution going on for a century.
What is actually needed is a counter-revolution.
And not one led by the author of this piece.
Would be repeating the same mistake all over again. I'd fight to ditch this constitution. Why would I fight to "restore" it? The consolidation of power created by the Constitution is the SOURCE of our problems.
What would you suggest?
Create a National Socialist American Empire complete with Caesar in command?
OOPS!
We have that already...
You obviously aren’t Irish. I am, hence no love for Cromwell.
Scotch-Irish and German on my mother side, On my father side English and French. A Southerner whose family sided with the British in the Revolution, but fought for the Union in the U.S. Civil War.
I like Cromwell because he overthrew King and Parliament: A man who could take just so much crap from the ruling establishment before he rebelled and destroyed it.
Cromwell is a perfect example of what's wrong with revolution. Our own revolution is an anomaly in history in that tyrants did not immediately rise from it.
No, Cromwell is your textbook example of a revolutionary. He overthrew the English monarchy, executed Charles I, then invaded Ireland, burned down churches where people were taking refuge, ordered all priests to be executed immediately upon capture, massacred civilians etc etc. The man is no one to look up to, and is especially hated in Ireland to this day.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on Cromwell.
Sure, no problem. But if you're ever in Ireland I'd keep my admiration for the Butcher of Drogheda (as he's known there) quiet as centuries later he's still the most hated man in Ireland. The curse, mallacht Chromail ort, is still very much in use there.
