Actually, everything is a parallel universe!
Over the Holiday I tried to remember what I once read about the subject of "sanity."
The author of the article in question said, in effect, that there is no sanity because reality itself is a moving target. And it is different for each person pursuing it.
Therefore, the correct definition of sanity is that it is "the process by which a human being chases his/her ever-changing reality."
People who are insane refuse to take part in the chase. They develop their own fantasy world unrelated to the quarry/game that is reality.
Those of us who chase reality are defined by our pursuit of it. Those who turn away from the chase are defined by their fear of what they might find if they caught it.
In short, it is a game of courage! And the insane refuse to muster theirs!
