Well, that goes without saying. Everything is racist here.

I remember when they were about to install the camera out on the eastern bypass and there were complaints that the enforcement would be racist. Racist cameras? Who knew?

The same went for mandatory insurance. Racist.

Getting rid of the no-fee antique license plates? You guessed it...racist.

Asking for ID to vote? Yep…racist.

Still, I do miss MGM.

City government doesn’t care if it causes more accidents. All they want is their cash. In many or most cases, they shorten the yellow light at these camera locations so that the average person going to work will be caught running the light. If you’re a contract worker, it’s not worth losing a day’s pay to go to court and fight the ticket. That’s what they’re counting on...that most people will just pay it.

I got a ticket in the mail for running a “red” light once after a bad thunderstorm headed to work. The light was green as I approached then it turned yellow and almost immediately turned red (no 3-4 second lapse) as I was going through it. I just figured the storm had disrupted the cycle, it would be discovered to be not working and they would send a crew to fix it. Come to find out, they deliberately “fixed” it (and other camera lights) that way. I went back to the location and studied the length of the yellow light. It was much shorter than most other lights around town. They deliberately shortened the yellow light cycle. That, plus the fact that there were two large light cables that hung down over the traffic light (since Hurricane Ike) which impaired the view of the light as you approached made me think this was intentional on the part of the city. Needless to say, since I was contract, I didn’t go to court. It would have cost me more money to do so. And that is how they profit.

My point was that it is still pure speculation. Dutchboy jumped to that conclusion with no evidence. He might as well have said that the guy “probably” exploded in a fireball that engulfed half the downtown area. He had just as much evidence. Assumptions are like.....

I’m sure if we looked at the lobbying for these red light cameras from coast to coast, we’d find some politically connected individuals profiteering off of this scheme.

Here in Houston, the police bought some bogus “drug detector” that looked like an ACME device from a Wiley Coyote cartoon. No, seriously you put in a “card” and it would detect for that substance. It was just a box and some do-nothing wires. They used it for drug searches in schools. The vendor was somebody’s son or brother. I believe that the FBI got involved in busting that racket.

The conclusion was that the rear end collision when someone was trying to stop for a light was far less dangerous that someone getting T-boned by someone running a red light.

Because neck injuries (or even paralysis) are so much more encouraging.

Yah assumptions can be like that but some are also pretty safe to make. I prefer more reasonable arguments against traffic cams.

"how would you feel about a camera in the restroom to make sure you wash your hands for a full 10 secs and if you didn't, an alarm would go off?...maybe a citation and a fee?"

???? You think this is going to become a bathroom camera?

"I’ve ran red lights, and stop signs, because of lack of attention - from kids, to outright day dreaming. Luckily, I’ve never hit anyone or anything while doing so."

Yes, the rest of us are happier about that than you.

Of course, it would have been much better had a human cop been there and noticed you day dreaming and then issued the ticket.

"The Sixth Amendment protects the people's right "to be confronted with the witnesses against him." You cannot confront a machine, nor compel the machine to appear in court to be cross-examined. A machine does not accuse, nor offer testimony."

So, you would be against convicting the monster that was sniping out of his car trunk based upon a video that showed them firing on the public because it would abridge their civil liberties since no human saw them? Please. Go back and read the spirit of the law.

"Red light cameras are not about safety. They are about revenue. Post a cop at the light and hand out tickets the old fashioned way."

At least here is an honest opinion. You like the ticket, just do it the "old fashioned way." Great logic. Why not mount him on a horse, the old fashioned way and have him chisel it in stone, the old fashioned way. Give me a break.

thats idiotic

You think red light cameras are about more than revenue, prove it. You can’t because all the studies show they increase accidents as well as revenue.

"We have those cameras in our town. If you stop with your bumper over the white line, you get a ticket. Yesterday, I was ridding with my daughter who only has a learners permit. We came upon one of those intersections and the light turned yellow when we were far too close to stop. My daughter practically skidded trying to stop in time while the car behind us was inches away trying to avoid hitting us. I ask her why she did that and she said, “ It’s one of those that takes your picture.” I feel those are actually MORE likely to cause a crash."

Okay, we are in deep trouble when learning to comply with the law is only an issue if you actually get punished when you fail. As long as no one was looking, she could roll through the light. And, yes, sure enough, stopping when she should will truly cause more accidents. I think we have entered the twilight zone.

"all the studies"???

With that logic, we should remove the red lights themselves. This is truly bizarre thinking.

"Let’s see. If you have a late GM car, it can be shut down by remote control. If you have a new Smart Meter from the utility company, they can cut your power with the push of a button. If you’re a bit late making it through the intersection, the camera flashes and the fine here is $451. Go too fast? Same thing."

Well aren't we glad it's not the 19th century when they hung you for just borrowing a horse for a run to the grocery store? Come on, folks, get a grip.

Focus on the big issues, the red light cameras don't do anything if you don't. So don't. Unless pushing the edge is really what you are about. If so, then why should anyone have sympathy for you? You are defining "freedom" as being able to get just beyond what the law says. Re read your post...it reeks of rebellion.

Sorry tarawa, the all time capital in red light deaths, Phoenix, saw a dramatic drop in deaths at intersections. I live here and saw the impact. Keep them and the freeway speed cameras too (although those are coming down). Hmmm.

Seen enough dead folks at the scene to prove that bad drivers are the cause of accidents not red light cameras. Otherwise, you should be arguing guns kill people, people don't kill people.

give it up dutchboy, you didn’t read the story, made a fool of yourself, and cannot dig out.

The London has cameras all over the place and crime is still rising. Most of the cameras aren’t event monitored unless they know a crime has been committed.

Forget cops sitting in the donut shop, lets put them in a lazy boy watching the revenue stream in from these cameras.
