From 1977 to 1983 Israel had a Prime Minister who did not mince words when it came to protecting his country, he was slow to make agreements because once made he believed they should be followed. His political philosophy was created in the background of the Holocaust, watching Britain and US refusals to allow Jews to immigrate to safety while Hitler was mercilessly committing genocide. Yes he was a terrorist in his youth, but unlike today's terrorists, he targeted military targets and tried to avoid civilian casualties. He was a stickler for the meaning of words and the lessons of history.
In 1991 Menachem Begin, one of Israel's great Prime Minister's stood up to Ronald Reagan one of America's great Presidents.
In an unprecedented move, Mr. Begin summoned the United States ambassador to Israel, and read to him the following statement. It was later read to the cabinet and issued to the public. Mr. Begin complained that the U.S. had punished Israel three times in the past six months. Israel was no. "vassal state" or a "banana republic." He also hinted of anti-Semitic overtones in some of the punitive measures taken by the United States. It was a statement that the present Prime Minister would do very well to repeat.

We can only wish for his fate to match some selected dictators of the past.
Concerning Begin, he even had an arrest warrant for him in some countries up until he died. I hope Bibi stands up to our thugs today !
The answer to that question is yes. As long as Israel accept welfare payments from the American taxpayer, it is now right to whine about being a “vassal state.” When it proudly rejects such welfare, however, it can claim that right.
He means 1981? Reagan was not president in 1991.
In theory you are correct — the US Aid to Israel was 2.5 Billion in 2009 -— 75% of which was subsidies to purchase or develop US weapons, so most of this money stays domestically in the USA and significantly decreases the “unit” costs of American weapons, as the USA buys these same weapons and the sales keep USA cost down.
It’s a significant help to Israel, still, to put the size of the aid in perspective, the USA gives Eqypt $1.7 billion and Jordan $.6 billion per year, $.6 billion to the “Palestinian authority” etc.
In short, the USA aid to Israel is about the same as the USA gives to terrorist nations.
Given Israel’s strategic role in the middle east, it is also money well spent. Certainly cheaper than an air-craft carrier fleet.
What have gotten for this "money well spent." Let's put emotion and religious arguments aside for a minute and be hard-headed realists here. U.S. aid to Israel has been the stated rationale for multiple attacks on our forces and has drawn us into two extremely expensive wars. One of the wars brought to power a symathizer with the Taliban, the other made Sadr into a kingmaker.
What have we gotten in exchange for this support which nobody can deny has pissed off every single country in an entire region? I suppose you could argue that Israel is a "reliable ally" but even that is not true. Reliable allies don't spy on each other. Israel, like most other countries, is motived by its own perceived national interest regardless of whether that national interest conflicts with our national interest.
Hey, Pat. How are things on MSNBC?
“. U.S. aid to Israel has been the stated rationale for multiple attacks on our forces”
Cartoons serve as the stated rationale for attacks on our forces.
“and has drawn us into two extremely expensive wars.”
Truther nonsense. Arab muslim terrorists flying into buildings in NYC drew us into two wars.
Only a fool would fail to ask WHY the Muslim terrorists did what they did.
Muslims did it because we are not muslim.
Only a fool would think it otherwise.
You and your “blame the Jooos for 9/11” can go to hell.
(BTW, Captain Kirk was Jewish. Think of a new screen name.)
