Documents show Iran’s quest for atomic bombs

The father of Pakistan’s nuclear-weapons program has written an official account that details an Iranian attempt to buy atomic bombs from Pakistan at the end of the 1980s and also conflicts with the Pakistani government’s assertion that bombmaker Abdul Qadeer Khan proliferated nuclear know-how without government approval.

Hizballah Rocket Arsenal Approaching 50,000

March 15, 2010

WASHINGTON — The Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah is approaching an arsenal of 50,000 missiles and rockets.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Hizbullah has rapidly expanded its missile and rocket arsenal in Lebanon. Barak said Hizbullah weapons could strike any target in Israel.

‘These weapons that they have mainly cannot be used against any military target,’ Barak said. ‘They are not accurate enough. The only conceivable use of most of those weapons is against civilian populations in heavily urban concentration, and that’s what they tried to do in the past.’

But the defense minister said Hizbullah has acquired a weapon that ‘many sovereigns do not have.’ He did not elaborate.

‘If Hizbullah succeeds in avenging Mughniyeh by striking an Israeli target — whether on the border or abroad — it could set off another round of fighting similar to that of 2006,’ the report said. ‘This time, however, other actors could well enter the fray. If one takes Damascus at its word, Syria may decide to participate in the next Israeli-Hizbullah war, a development that could spark a region-wide conflagration.’
