Retirees will NOT receive an extra $250 Social Security payment this year. The Senate voted 47 to 50 yesterday against sending seniors an additional one-time check.
President Obama called for the $250 payment for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities in October shortly after the Social Security Administration announced that seniors would not receive a cost-of-living increase in 2010. This is the first year without a boost in Social Security payments since automatic increases for inflation began in 1975.
[See Job Search Grows Cold, Creating Reluctant Retirees.]
Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent, and nine Democrat cosponsors introduced the proposal yesterday as an amendment to legislation extending unemployment benefits through the end of the year. The measure was similar to a provision of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act that distributed one-time $250 economic recovery payments to seniors in May 2009 at a cost of $13.7 billion.
12 Democrats and one independent joined 37 Republicans in defeating the amendment. One Republican and one independent sided with 45 Democrats in supporting the extra payment. Three Republicans did not vote.

Social Security payments are tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, which did not increase between the third quarter of 2008 and 2009. Existing Social Security recipients will receive the same amount this year as they did in 2009.

In Brief
Terror probe
Police honing in on 15 suspects, two currently in jail
Counterterrorism police who have intensified their search for members of a new generation of terrorist groups following the death of a 35-year-old suspected terrorist in a shootout in southeastern Athens earlier this month are focusing on 15 suspects, sources have told Kathimerini. Two of the suspects are believed to be in jail, the sources said. Police stepped up their investigation into the suspected involvement of Lambros Fountas in terrorist activities after a posthumous search of his home turned up a detailed map of the capitals police surveillance cameras.
Migrant camps
Minister heralds border units
Deputy Citizens Protection Minister Spyros Vougias said yesterday that a new migrant reception center would be up and running on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos by summer and that another unit would open in Evros, near the Turkish land border, by next year. Both the units are to replace now-defunct centers that have drawn the criticism of human rights organizations. Local authorities at the borders have said they do not have the resources to deal with a relentless influx of undocumented immigrants.
Rally tomorrow
Members of the civil servants union ADEDY are to hold another rally in central Athens tomorrow to protest the governments austerity measures. The rally will come a week after the previous civil servants march in the capital which was marred by violence. ADEDY, which has staged three 24-hour strikes in a month, complains that cuts in the public sector are unfair and one-sided.
Lawyers strike
Lawyers are to walk off the job for three days this week after the coordinating committee of the countrys bar associations called strikes for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in protest at an increase in value-added tax on their services. The committee criticized the government for failing to address problems in the legal sector, including a huge backlog of cases.
Social Security payments are tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, which did not increase between the third quarter of 2008 and 2009. Existing Social Security recipients will receive the same amount this year as they did in 2009.<<<

We had the trash bag bombs here about 5 years ago.
They were tested on a lake in Louisiana and found in several areas as floating bombs.
Also used Styrofoam ice chests and there was the fishing boat that was loose in Seattle and a man snagged it and hauled it to the dock, only to find it full of explosives.
Yes, many more examples out there, but you are right, run and expect a second blast to go off, for they will try to kill the rescuers.
I know your memory is far better than mine for these incidents.
Thanks for your feedback granny.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

United States Transfers Three Guantanamo Bay Detainees to Georgia
The Department of Justice today announced that three detainees have been transferred from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the custody and control of Georgia.
As directed by the Presidents January 22, 2009 Executive Order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of these cases. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, the detainees were approved for transfer by unanimous consent among all the agencies involved in the Task Force. In accordance with Congressionally-mandated reporting requirements, the Administration informed Congress of its intent to transfer these detainees at least 15 days before their transfer.
Earlier today, three detainees, whose identities are being withheld for security and privacy reasons, were transferred to Georgia. The United States is grateful to Georgia for its willingness to support U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
These transfers were carried out under an arrangement between the United States and Georgia. The United States coordinated with the Georgia to ensure the transfers took place under appropriate security measures and consultations regarding these individuals will continue.
Since 2002, more than 580 detainees have departed Guantanamo Bay for other destinations.

Former Gitmo detainee leads top Taliban council
By BILL ROGGIO
March 23, 2010 11:09 AM
SNIPPET: Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar has named two new leaders to replace the head of its leadership council, who was detained in Pakistan earlier this year. One of the two new leaders was released from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in 2007.
Mullah Abdul Qayum Zakir and Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansur have been named by Omar to replace Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a Taliban operative named Abu Zabihullah told Newsweek.
SNIPPET: Zakir is a former detainee at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility who was released by the US in December 2007 and sent to Afghanistan, where he was subsequently released by the Afghan government. Zakir, whose real name is Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul, quickly rejoined the Taliban and took over operations in the strategic Afghan South.”
Nuclear Terrorism: ‘It’s Not Personal; It’s Just Business (Part Two of Ten)
March 24, 2010
by Peter Huessy
‘Its not personal; its just business.’ So said Michael Corleone in the 1972 film The Godfather. It is also what numerous companies, countries, banks and individuals might very well say if confronted with the evidence that they are selling technology to Iran and Iran-front companies that contribute to Tehran’s pursuit of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. The only tool, which European and American leaders now believe, will help them stall and perhaps reverse Iran’s pursuit of the nuclear bomb is what is often referred to as ‘crippling sanctions.’ To be effective, a host of countries and companies will both have to be either shamed or fined into stopping their deadly traffic. The sanctions clock is thus in a race with the nuclear technology clock the former has never been seriously pursued while the latter, firmly in the hands of the revolutionary elements in Iran, is proceeding with a seriousness not matched by the will of the free nations of the world to bring it to a stop.
The following story tells us some of what we need to know. On a fog-shrouded evening within the last year, an Ilyushin-76 North Korean cargo plane left Azerbaijan, flew to the UAE, then on to Bangkok, then to Pyongyang, back to Bangkok to refuel, where it had planned to fly to Sri Lanka, then back to the UAE, to Kiev, to Tehran and then to Montenegro. The cargo? What the Thai authorities found after impounding the plane, was 35 tons of weapons including shoulder-fired rockets, surface to air missiles, and parts to the Tae-podong-2 long-range ballistic missile, falsely labeled ‘oil drilling spare parts.’ The various waypoints in the cargo planes itinerary? Well-known trans-shipment points for weapons to terrorists such as Hezbollah and terrorist regimes such as Iran.
The Ilyishin-76 was registered in Georgia, leased to SP Trading Ltd, a shell company registered in New Zealand, which in turn leased the plane to a Honk Kong company, owned by another Hong Kong firm, owned in turn by a third company in the British Virgin Islands. This company, Overseas Cargo FZE, is based in one of the UAE’s emirates, is owned by Svetlana Zykova. Some of the weapons may have been produced in China, sold to North Korea wholesale. The plane traveled over Chinese airspace.
In Venezuela, Moscow is assisting in training nuclear scientists and has discussed helping Caracas with the construction of several nuclear power plants, what former Pentagon official Peter Brooks calls ‘bomb starter kits.’ Iran is also helping Venezuela with ballistic missiles, (the distance between Caracas and Miami is 1400 miles, the range of the Iranian Shahab missiles). In turn, Venezuela says it will supply Iran with 182,000 barrels of refined gasoline a day, or 66 million barrels annually, (this compares to the 140,000 barrels of refined petroleum a day Iran now imports), in case the U.S. Congress passes legislation to cut-off refined gasoline sales to Iran.
snipped
What we have seen recently may be the re-emergence of a network or cartel, led by the ‘triple cactus axis’ North Korea, Venezuela and Iran grafted onto traditional weapons suppliers China and Russia to assist Iran in building nuclear bombs and the ballistic missiles with which to deliver them. Too many companies and countries apparently exist for which business trumps security, and cash trumps common sense. One major Italian company President, when asked why his company was helping Iran build tunnels in which to hide nuclear weapons work, exploded: ‘There is no gas in Switzerland!’ If reports are true that another round of UN endrosed sanctions will not affect Tehran’s energy sector or its banks, the future ‘arrows of Allah’ may indeed be tipped with nuclear weapons.
continues....I know it is a long ‘snip’, go and read what I did not snip, it will scare you.

Tehran’s Terrible Future - and Maybe America’s Too
March 24, 2010
by James Carafano, PhD
snipped...
The lesson for Washington is that the United States, a long-established nuclear power, must act like a responsible one. The Obama administration has started a mad dash down the ‘road to zero’ with the announced goal of eliminating our nuclear arsenal. It’s a path more likely to end in a nuclear firestorm than in peace.
Why? The danger starts with the administration’s refusal to fully modernize our nuclear weapons. Our aging inventory is increasingly less usable and reliable. The continuing erosion of a credible deterrent force will only invite aggression.
Moreover, slashing U.S. arsenals may well spur a news arms race. It may encourage emerging atomic enemies such as Iran and North Korea to ‘pick up the pace’ to become our nuclear equals. That in turn could spark other nations wary of these rogue regimes to fast-track their own nuclear programs. Instead of easing tensions, our nuclear drawdown could ratchet up worldwide instability.
The administration has compounded its nuclear error by hobbling our missile defense program. War gaming exercises consistently show missile defenses not only deter attacks, they deter others from even building up their arsenals. Why build missiles when they’ll just be shot down?
A world on fire is horrific vision of the future. The Iranian administration views it as glorious, while our administration steadfastly averts its gaze. It should worry peace-loving Iranians and Americans alike.

TSA to Propose Limited General Aviation Security Measures
March 24, 2010
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has opted for relaxing proposed security measure for general aviation (GA); the new plan is likely to exempt all general aviation aircraft smaller than mid-size jets as defined by maximum takeoff weight or fuel capacity; pilots of such mid-size and larger GA aircraft would be required to go through a vetting process and earn ‘trusted pilot’ credentials

‘With the release of these leaders, we have brought to a conclusion our programme of dialogue and reconciliation,’ he added, in reference to a policy of reaching out to Islamists begun in 2007 by the Kadhafi Foundation, which he heads.
‘Since the beginning of this programme, 705 Islamists have been freed, while 409 are still in prison, and 232 of them will be set free soon,’ Mr Islam added.
In 2007, Al-Qaeda announced that the LIFG had joined the jihadist network. But last year, the Kadhafi Foundation announced that Islamists being held in Libyan prisons that had previously had links with Al-Qaeda had renounced those ties.
‘This is an historic event,’ Mr Islam said, adding that the authorities would continue releasing prisoners until all those still in jail are freed.

If the reports are accurate, the expulsion would result in the removal
of an important channel of communication between the Mossad and
Britains security services, one that has provided London with valuable
information on developments in Middle Eastern arenas such as Iraq.
Al-Qaida views Britain as the head of a Western snake and an immediate
target. Its not very smart to kick out a representative of a foreign
intelligence agency that is helping you, former senior Mossad member
Rami Igra told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
