What did the parents expect? The school district issued these laptops so they can run them any way they please. Perhaps they should vote for candidates for the school board who will stop wasting money on these things.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm quite sure they can't invade the privacy of a private home, which is what they were/are doing.

And I'm DAMN sure they couldn't invade my home.

You're joking, right? So in your world, the woman who is date-raped shouldn't complain because the guy bought her dinner, so what did she expect?

Not quite. Taking the computers does not give the school district blanket permission to run them any way they like. It's still illegal.

What would have been more accurate to say is that the school district WILL run them any way they like.

Apparently there was an agreement between the laptop users and the district that outlined responsibilities for both parties, because the parents objected that spying on the household wasn’t in the agreement. If there’s an agreement, then they can’t just do anything they want to. People will rely on the agreement to be truthful and reasonably comprehensive.
