I've tried but I have found it impossible to have a close relationship with a card-carrying liberal...we have a token one at work and it's all I can do to keep my distance and get through the days. Fortunately 90 % of my co-workers are conservatives ....and that is in California!
I've found most true liberals to be hypocrites, especially relatives.
I've met some reasonable "liberals," who lean conservative in their personal lives. They tend to support liberal politicians and causes as a "family tradition." Their parents were democrats, therefore, they too are democrats. When they have an eye opening experience (like a mugging or other violent crime) they often abandon the ideology and turn to the right.
Being a liberal or conservative is not like disagreeing on what color is your favorite. Or what movie...or what type of food, etc. If you are part of a movement that wishes to destroy my way of life and damage the country I was born in and come to love, you are no friend of mine and a person I want nothing to do with. Ostracizing someone is a non-violent method of neutralizing societal threats. I shun liberals at every chance.
I too have tired over the years to have liberal friends. Mostly neighbors etc. The saying goes liberalism is a mental disorder. It is very true. All of them were wacky in some way.
