I heard back from the Director of Archives and Collections at the Petroleumn Museum today. She said that the drum appears to be from the time period 1870 - 1911. Standard Oil was broken up in 1911 into different companies. She says that the "Standard Oil Co." and serial number on the top support dating the drum to that period.
She said that her museum has a similar drum from Magnolia Company (later Socony-Mobil). Their drum came from an old gas station and was used to pump oil and gasoline. She thinks my drum had a similar purpose.
She isn't able to give me an estimate on the drum's value but I've asked her to refer me to someone who can appraise it. We'll see what turns up.
Constitution Day - Do you know anyone in your industry who could appraise the drum?
Very interesting piece of history there friend. Grateful for the update.
One has to wonder WHAT that was used to service.
Train, machinery, Tractor or first automobiles ?
Thanks again an good luck with your search for its value.
Hey, I just found a drum just like yours in a river near my house!! I was planning to cut the top off and store chicken feed in it =) Have you found any real value in it as an antique? Love to hear a reply.
Yes. It’s valuable. An oil museum called me back about it recently, they’re sending someone to appraise it. If it’s in good condition, which they think it is from the pictures, they’ll buy it.
Welcome to FR. Did you join FR just to post that question? Keep me posted on what you find out about your drum. Send me a private reply (freepmail) if you will to tell me where you found it.

Looks like great potential for a one of kind BBQ smoker and grill.
Hey, I sent a private reply Did you get it? I don’t know how these things work. Yes, I joined FR just to post that question. I found my drum in a river (not much more than a creek) in Lewis co Missouri. Mine has same diameter top and bottom flares out in middle, is yours narrower at the bottom, looks like it in the pic.
Hey, thanks. You responded so quickly the first time Thought maybe I didn’t send the other email correctly.
Hi All,
I also have a Standard Oil drum like the one above. Are there any updates as to the value? Anyone interested in buying mine? I found it while out in Arkansas and just had to buy it, mainly cause it was unusual. It is in EXCELLENT shape. It looks like it’s got some dates stamped on the top.

If I could figure out how to post some pics on here, I would do it, but I gotta do some research, I guess
If any interest, feel free to contact me at oldhotrodder1@yahoo.com or on my cell at 912-278-1314
Oh, Hi
Just thought I’d check back and, sure enough, another reply.
I ended up selling my drum at the local antique store for 25 bucks. Two weeks later I was at the scrap yard selling some recycle metal and guess what I saw... Another standard oil drum high up on the shred pile! Looked like it had been painted at one time and badly dented but I thought it was a funny coincidence.
Never did get a second reply from Buckeye Texan.... Don’t know what the deal is there
