A CNN correspondent said Monday she was detained byChinese security guards in Shanghai for two hours for displaying a T-shirt on camera depicting US President Barack Obama as Mao Zedong.

Emily Chang, a Beijing-based correspondent for the US television network, said in a blog post on CNN.com that she hunted down the shirt after hearing they had been banned amid fears they "may offend the American president."

The shirt shows Obama, who is making his first visit to China as president, in a Red Army uniform staring into the distance in a pose made famous by the former Chinese leader. Etc.....

I think it’s neither really, but it oculd be that the T-shirt might imply that Zero is as equal to Mao. However, this owuld be seen as an insult to Mao, not a compliment to Zero that he (Zero) and Mao share the same goals and philosophy.

Mao was never the fool Zero is. Someone who makes it through the revolution, Long March, internal chaos, then to unify the country and then proceed to dismantle 5000 years of culture, is not someone to be looked upon lightly. The biggest mistake that all our leaders, from Nixon to now and then Stalin, is that they viewed Mao as somewhat of a noble savage personality. That Mao and the Communist founders were some sort of confused peasants who needed (and still need) enlightened Westerners to guide them. I remember seeing a documentary (or reading a book, I’m not sure) that described how Stalin tried to treat Mao as an errand boy who would administer China according to the interests of the Soviets.

Which never happened. The Chinese view Mao as a great leader and in a lot of respects he was. He unified the country and for better or worse, changed things remarkably. To equate Zero with Mao is like equating Mother Teresa to Madonna. It requires the tearing down of Mao since Zero could never at any point be the leader Mao was.

As long as our leaders look upon the CHinese as benign, unenlightened peasants, then we are going ot continue to fail to properly deal with them and hold our own.
