"Retainers to the Emperor still bow that low to him, but properly with a great deal of dignity."

No American would.

Like I said, differences of opinion abound.

On second thought, looking at that picture, certainly not that low, even as a non-entity in the hierarchical scheme of things here...imagine this coming from a President.

A good example is the Emperor hosting Japanese once a year to Imperial Cultural Awards ceremonies. The J women in kimono and men in black mourning suits give somewhat of a bow when it is their turn to have small talk His Majesty in the lineup, but certainly not this kind of Obama "bow" as in the proverbial "bowing and scraping".

Yep, those Japanese spouses know how to read this one for sure.

Are you sure he didn’t drop a colored contact on the floor?

Agreed. I was just outlining plausible scenarios, even if somewhat remote. But believe me, there are some real idiots with client-itis over at the Embassy these days. Some of them might JUST have planted this in his ear when discussing protocal. Whats more likely the case though, your take in fact, is that the joker just freelanced at the last moment and stepped into a world of shit in terms of cultural and geopolitical sensitivities. What an idiot.

Oh good Lord! Our butt kisser n chief is at it again.

If that man finds no pride in being an American and feels like he has be subservient to other leaders then I wish the heck he would just stay the over there. That way he could crawl around on the floor and butt kiss all day long.

You are so not PC. That should be "African-American" contact.

I think between what I have written and what Candor7 has written, you should listen to him first. He obviously has more experience than I have.

I've been on the Emperor's grounds in central Tokyo, but I've never met any of the royal family in person. Other than being angrily corrected by my late wife - "It's Michiko-sama!!" in speech, I never had exposure to that level of protocol.

I would bow to him in Japan just because that's the culture, but not that low.

(I also genuflected to my current manager when he was named to the position. I would never do that outside of the US).

For him to think the spin will be normal waits to be seen. If NBC tomorrow shows this over and over with no reference to saud will tell the story.

Yep. This brilliant man just really stepped in the guano, didnt he, here in Asia?

They will play him like a stradivarious all around Asia now, particularly in Beijing, and even where he is not going, in enemy Pyongyang.

This was the tone he set at the OAS meeting where Chavez stepped up and used him, whereupon Zelaya in Honduras was immediately emboldened to try to seize unending power through a referendum coup and had to be constitutionally removed, I am convinced (looking at the timeline).

This is dangerous. This imagery can become the precursors to the precursors to war, because it emboldens the enemy in their psych profiling of our leaders and whether they are made of "the stuff" or not.

Now watch North Korea REALLY start to test him, to rattle his cage to see if he gets the squirts, by stepping up provocations in the Yellow (West) Sea along the NLL and the DMZ, prior to him going to Seoul next week.

Good night! Zero is not bowing. He is looking for a rock of crack cocaine he dropped on the ground. He is just pretending to bow.

Excellent reply, obviously written by someone who deeply understands Japanese culture, and borne out by the body language and facial expressions of the Japanese Emporer and Empress.

No American would.>>>>>>>>>>>

Agreed.

Why should an American do so. Without that genuine reationship which is so distinctly Japanese?

( To get something)

Thats what the bow means looking at it from the Japanese point of view.It is dishonorable. An imposition of burgeoning political correctness, the method that neo fascists use to control situations. It may work in the USA with the socialistas, but hardly in Japan. The fact that Obama would do so makes him a "neo-colonialist." A man with an exploitive plan, while thinking his posturing disguises his method. Its like a pig trying to hide behind a bamboo pole, thinking no one can see him. To the Japanese he is so apparently dishonorable.

From the American point of view, we bow to no man. We are free, and it shows.Thats why I agree with you.

And where did THAT come from? Men like Samual Adams, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, but before that we as Americans learned that freedom in part from native Americans, who bowed to no man. As refugees from Europe, very few of us brought it with us back then.

I may be wrong but in strict traditional terms I think this means the US is a vassal state of Japan.

Lord help us, the presidency is way above his pay grade.

What an awesome game....

The George H.W. Bush trip to Japan will be recalled for him throwing up in the lap of Prime Minister Miyazawa.

The Obama trip to Japan will be recalled for him committing an act of near "dogeza" (subservient prostration) in front of the Emperor.

All that was missing was the throw-up.
