I am more sympathetic than most in these parts to the Lost Cause, but Lincoln was nobody’s fool, nor was he an a$$. Lincoln was shrewd, principled, resolute and possessed of internal humility like few people in his position have ever had. (Consider his second Inaugral speech for evidence.)

That, notwithstanding, the Civil War was a catastrophe that no one on either side foresaw. If they had, it is unlikely that either side would not have done much more to avoid it.

I personally blame the Civil War (not abolition which was inevitable without the Civil War) for most of our problems today. It provided an enormous impetus to the dogooders and progressives from which we never recovered. Having “conquered slavery” they were filled with themselves and turned their unbridled hubris and ferver on every preceived ill in the Republic. The Republic may not survive much more progress.

I attribute the Spanish-American War (the source of so much of our current problems) and our involvement in World War I to effects of the Civil War. Teddy Roosevelt watched Lincoln’s funerary procession pass by his bedroom window as a child; he and others in his generation were fired with progressive zeal, a lust to fix every problem by force if at all possible.

Without U.S. interference in World War I, it is likely that the Europeans could have worked out their problems without another even worse conflagation, into which we were also dragged.

I don’t think Yankee interference helped the freedman much. It only stirred up resentments that have never really healed.

If Obama is gonna’ apologize for something that happened 145 years ago, and which he had nothing to do with, so his apology is worthless anyways, it would just basically be a PR move.

Ah, yes, satire, what a waste of time. Tell that to Rush Limbaugh who has made a career out of using satire and humor to make his points...

Better questions for you...Why does Obama waste America's resources and time on apology tours? Why did Jimmy Carter need to apologize to Jefferson Davis 90 years after his death?

We need Sherman in charge of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“In 1978, Carter posthumously removed the limitation against Confederate President Jefferson Davis running for public office again. Davis had been dead for nearly 90 years but the uber-compassionate Jimmy Carter knew how much the gesture would do to heal the wounds of war. Now Carter feels that Obama’s visit to Atlanta will go a long way towards completing the healing process. “

Idiot...complete idiot...

Back in the 60s and 70s my dad had a Texaco Service station in Virginia. He was also a Justice of the Peace, and my mom was the County Court Clerk. On the weekends, the State Police would set up radar just past the store, and Mom would have us take sandwiches and fried chicken to the troopers so they would keep the radar going the better part of the day. Dad made a couple of bucks on every ticket they wrote. Lots of funny stories being around the Virginia State Police. Good bunch of people.

When I got my first car, 72 Nova SS, I stopped by the Clerks office to visit with Mon. She had a brand new State Trooper in the office and introduced me to him. He said, “I’m glad we’re meeting in here instead of out on the road.” I replied (much to Mom’s consternation), “Yeah, cause if we were out on the road, I’d blow your doors off.”

Once the speed trap got a Pennsylvania victim for speeding. She was really ticked off and was on the verge of arrest for the abuse she was heaping on Dad as he processed her. She had to pay the fine which she would forfeit if she failed to appear in court. When she left she spun gravel all over the parking lot. The trooper looked at dad and said, “I’ll be back.” He got her for speeding again, and she had a whole different outlook on life the second ticket.

That is the only acceptable way to fight a war!!!

My hero, General Eisenhower, would completely agree. If you aren't willing to wage total warfare in order to win, do not commit American troops to battle. Ike felt that was exactly the mistake LBJ made in Vietnam. If you read McCain's memoir, "Faith of My Fathers", McCain and his father echoed those same sentiments.

America can win any conflict when the Commander in Chief frees our military to win the war. We should never apologize to the Japanese for Hiroshima or Nagasaki. They should have apologized to Truman for not surrendering sooner. We didn't start the war, but we sure as hell finished it.

It’s not giberish! Obama was elected to apologize to EVERYONE! In fact, teh White House web site has a link to the Apology Bank - they are so short of things to apologize for that they need Democrats and liberals and young, stupid people to contribute things they can apologize for! Do be lame, think of some things that need an apology...capitalism, the military, free speech, Second Amendment...these are already spoken for...so let’s get creative folks. How about apologizing for our lame educational system, or abortion, or ...OOps, they already have....Sorry.

“My hero, General Eisenhower, would completely agree”

Eisenhower gave orders to a friend of mine to not harm Nuremberg.

He tore up the orders and leveled the joint.

He said there was no way he was going to let it stand since it was where Germany was producing gas from plants to run their war machine!

If Eisenhower hadn’t been screwing Roosevelt's daughter he wouldn't have ever been more than a lieutenant!

I’d been telling my wife to slow down since South Carolina, so I made sure not to say “I told you so”. I only have one question for your nephew, “What took you so long?”

The trooper was a very polite young man and my wife made sure she was on her best, “yes, officer”, “no, officer”, “why you don’t say? That fast! Really, officer?” behavior. If she had been herself, I’d probably still be visiting her on weekends.

Ike may have tried to spare Nuremberg, but he and Churchill gave the order to obliterate Dresden.

From the UK's Daily Mail But the order came down from then Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US Allied Commander Dwight D Eisenhower. ..."That's why Dresden got bombed," Sir Michael said.

But don't worry, I'm used to people attacking Eisenhower as a Commie, pinko wussy. I just laugh.

“Commie, pinko wussy.”

That’s exactly what he was, nothing but a mouthpiece for Roosevelt who was commie #1 and the worst President we ever had until now!.

Obama will never apologize to white people for anything. Unless you are black and/or a Muslim, you do not matter.

My Mother, the County Court Clerk didn’t allow alcohol in the house, so once my Brother-In-Law and I were off in the woods passing a bottle of scotch with my sister. I didn’t have that much (enough to get a buzz), and a short while later I headed home.

Sure enough before I got out of town they had a sobriety check set up. When I pulled up to the Deputy Sheriff, I asked, “what’s up?” and he said they were giving breathalyzer tests. So I said, “I just left Mom’s house; do you think a ham sandwich and a glass of milk will register on that thing?” He told me to get lost - closest I ever came to getting caught.
