Ken Olson whistled past the graveyard too long. DEC had the technology and the people to blow away Sun, Silicon Graphics and the rest. They just couldn't give up the huge margins they were making on proprietary hardware and software.

Guy on my block was the manager of "VMS Products". He had a staff of 14 people and they were making $250,000,000/year mailing out nine tracks tapes with Fortran compilers and such. It's hard to make yourself believe that that world is coming to an end.
