The Dell V305 printer came with my new Dell computer (Vista Home Premium OS).
The printer works okay but there are times when it will not print documents from the computer. I get a pop up that says the computer is not communicating with the printer even though everything is plugged in properly and the settings have not been touched.
I have heard that this happens with the V305. It has wireless capabilities but I use the USB option instead.
If you had to choose another printer that does not fail you, what would it be? Would need a printer/copier/scanner printer.
Thanks.
HP has always been good to me
Thanks. This is so frustrating. I also hate the fact that I have no documentation which would state what the symbols mean on the printer. I have this orange light that is lit up. Have no clue what that means.
At times my printer goes brain dead as well. I power off and power up the printer and then it works. I use a Brother 420CN Printer, Scanner & Fax. It’s been with me 5 years.
Revert to Win XP or upgrade to Linux the ultimate Windows service pack ( Hat tip to whomever’s tagline that is)
I’ve had an HP C4280 All-in-One for about 3 years with zero problems...
I got a wireless BrotherLC61 series and I love it. I’ve never had a wireless printer before and I love how it goes to sleep and wakes up to print. I guess I’m easily amused. lol It is also a scanner, copier, and fax machine.

I’ve had an HP printer/copier/scanner for several years, used with two different computers (Windows Me and Windows XP) with no problems. Specifically, it’s an HP PSC 1610 All-In-One. I’m sure that specific model is no longer made, but I’ve seen extremely similar ones in stores in the recent past. And don’t rule out Craiglist as a source of low-cost used electronics (assuming the seller is willing to demonstrate it works before you buy, and has the original software disc if applicable).
Here’s one very similar to mine:

Of course, Vista may be the problem. My experience with a Vista laptop was enough to convince me NEVER to buy a computer with Vista on it again. So when I decided to retire my Windows Me desktop, I got a great deal on a refurbished XP-loaded HP Pavilion on eBay.

That would be ShadowAce.
My Dell 2004-2006
I have to turn off my Norton Personal Fire wall in order for my Dell printer that came with my Dell computer to work. If not, I get the same message, about not being able to communicate etc.
Don’t call Dell tech support..the pits.
I had a printer which I really like and it never gave me problems. I still have it—a Dell A960 but Dell told me that would not be compatible with the Vista system. Bummer as I really liked it a lot. I use it as a stand alone but if I need to print from the computer, I am out of luck now.
I have tried everything but to no avail.
Maybe you should try to return the computer, and get a second hand computer with XP instead of Vista. Seriously, I could easily have afforded a new computer, but I went to the stores and there was nothing available except with Vista. A friend had recently bought a new computer with Vista that was “downgradeable” to XP, only to discover she had to pay a substantial extra fee to Microsoft to do the “downgrade” — she paid, but wasn’t happy about it. So I went on eBay and got a refurbished HP Pavilion with all the original setup disks (which had been used to restore the computer to its original factory settings and content), from a seller with a 100% rating who answered all my specific questions in advance, for $175 including shipping. I’m a happy camper, and all my old software and peripherals work fine with my cheap second-hand XP machine. Vista simply sucks.
This was a gift and we have had it for a month. The computer runs great and with no problem whatsoever but it is the V305 printer that gives me headaches.
My updates are current and there is no virus or malware, etc. on this system.
What I am not sure how to do is getting into the Firewall and what to check/uncheck with regard to my priner. I think it is the firewall that is causing problems.
I am not able to print documents from my computer. I can scan and I can make stand alone copies but nothing from my computer to the printer. All of the connections/cords are installed properly.
I have uninstalled and installed the printer software but nothing has helped.
I just need some assistance with firewall settings.
My computer is fine.
I have tried turning the firewall off also and that did not work.
