I think you are wrong, though, about “Americans not caring about who saved their lives.”
The “Halyard Mission” story about the 1944 rescues of American and Allied airmen in former Yugoslavia by the Serbs of General Mihailovich would not be known were it not for the Americans who fought so fiercely to have that story see the light of day. I have found that Americans are genuinely grateful and make it a point to give credit where credit is due.
Unfortunately, “official” government policy does not always correspond to the efforts of the people involved, even when those people are members of the United States military!!
