Beck to Couric: When I was an alcoholic, I was liberal; when I got sober, I dumped all that nonsense
Patriot Room ^ | September 23, 2009 | Bill Dupray

In the first few minutes, Couric asks him about his party affiliation (he leans libertarian), and he starts his answer by saying that when he was younger, he was socially liberal, but that he was also an alcoholic. When he got sober, he realized that liberalism was really not all it was cracked up to be. Couric didn't like that at all, but Beck just does an aw-shucks and gets out of it. It is a great.

I’m not a Glenn Beck “fan” per se. Meaning, I don’t listen to him either on his radio show or TV show. But I’ve seen enough to know that he speaks for ideals that are dear to the vast majority of the American public. That’s become obvious by his meteoric rise in ratings and his ability to overcome the so-called sponsor boycott of a month ago. I don’t listen because I’d rather spend my time here looking for news than in front of a TV where I’m handed something.

But to say the man lacks the courage of his convictions is silly to me. It would be very easy for someone like Beck, an alcoholic, one who’s emotions are easily brought out, to give in, make his show just another chatty, uninformative, worthless hour, or even walk away entirely. Yet he carries on. That he does so is all the proof I need of courage.

Who continues to read a script and expect a large check for it..

So, I'm confident you would include Rush Limbaugh, George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, et al, in that group. After all, it's what Rush does daily, what our presidents do every news briefing, press conference, public or congressional address, speaking engagement. In fact, your description would include anyone who speaks for pay before an audience. After all, what qualifies as a "large check" would be in the eye of the beholder.

Do you really think Beck does his own research?

That “his expose” brought down Van Jones?

Or was he just the mouthpiece?

No applause for him, sorry.

Amen!

Amorality is cowardice. There is a direct corellation between the removal of God from our public institutions and our lives and the steady decline of our nation. Drugs, "gay" rights, sexual "liberation" (indoctrination) of our youth, the denigration of those who believe in God by pop-culture and those in our "justice" department...all can be directly linked to our nation's decline.

Those who refuse to take a moral stand are as responsible as are those who actively work against our nation.

Glen Beck has done considerable service in fighting against the Left's aggressive push since Obama's election, but his and Libertarians' attempt to portray the two parties as somehow morally equivalent is dishonest and destructive...and cannot be factually defended.

The left has accused him of raping both a child and an elderly woman. Now they’re attacking him over the suicide of his mother. He also has private investigators following him around looking for dirt. I wouldn’t be at all surprised that there are more than a handful who would do physical harm to him if they could.

His detractors on the right are starting to remind me of the Jacksons and Sharptons of the world. They’ve been happy to keep their followers and fans happy with words but Beck came along and proved himself to be effective. They feel threatened by his effectiveness and all he asks is that they join in actually getting something done instead of whining about the democrats.

Do you really think it matters whether he has a team to do research or whether he does it himself? Do you really believe that the one who stands up and speaks, regardless of how he arrives at the information, is just a figurehead; even though it is he who garners all the hate and animosity?

Fine. Don’t applaud him. I doubt he’s troubled by it. Neither am I.

I watched the whole thing (I dislike the format where it cannot be paused) and formed the opinion that she expected fireworks and quotable sound bites that made her look good as an interviewer. Beck was so reasonable in demeanor and textual answer that she injected more and more of her own opinion in order to provoke the response she was looking for.

Beck 1 Couric 0

Yay, Sudentenland! I hope you post more of this when the libertarians hi-jack threads or post pro-Paul stuff. I bust their chops all the time for being cop-outs and get major flamed for my efforts...

a buddy of mine born and reaised near Springfield Mass, (now in his early 40s) says he used to be a liberal..until he got a job.

Did he change when he got the job or saw his first pay check? My daughters occasionally showed liberal tendencies until they saw the difference between (rate X time) and (rate X time - taxes).

His detractors on the right are starting to remind me of the Jacksons and Sharptons of the world.

It's dogs protecting their turf, after all. At least what they "see" as their turf. The Frums of this world can't stand anyone having more effect than them. So they lash out. And they have their proponents here, for sure. Some of whom I suspect are active on this thread.

Absolutely!

But you go ahead with your hero-worship.

Couric wanted to use the “alcohol” thing against him as a weapon. He took that weapon and used it against liberalism. Good for him.

I disagree with that statement and really dislike it. Liberals have no heart. They lie and cover up mass muder and genocide. They are the most ruthless people in the world.

But you go ahead with your hero-worship.

If you'd have read my post #12 you'd see he's no hero of mine. I don't even listen or watch the man. But I do give credit where due and he deserves credit for speaking out and helping America wake up to what we're facing. But, there are those of us who are so biased on behalf of our own agendas, that we can't even afford a good word for someone who has done what we've been unable to accomplish.

That's sad. It's also disgusting.

I would guess that his people do his research. His team under his direction. Then he chooses to use or not use what they come up with.

We don't live in a a socialist state - people get paid for what they produce not "according to their need"...

You got that right! If they ever show one again, watch a Libertarian Convention sometime on CSPAN (I did) - it shows you what the Libertarian movement is about...very interesting...and explains Ron Paul....

Your post is conflating the capital-L Libertarian Party with the small-L libertarian movement, which is a mistake.

It's important to look past the labels, just as it's important to avoid conflating being a member of the Republican Party with being conservative...
