in the 1700’s, white (along with black) was a color of mourning in europe. in the 1800’s black became more fashionable for mourning and white became more fashionable for wedding dresses.

My grandmother, born in the Ukraine in 1898, once mentioned that black was the color for wedding dresses when she was young.
