EXCERPT
Mr. Obama argued that his plan would lower costs by an average of $2,500 per family and said Mrs. Clinton's mandate for coverage would be unwieldy and unfair to enforce.
“You can mandate it, but there's still going to be people who can't afford it,” he said. “And if they cannot afford it, then the question is: What are you going to do about it? Are you going to fine them? Are you going to garnish their wages?”
Mr. Obama , noting his recent endorsement from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, said the Democratic Party's elder statesman has “gone through 12 of these plans, and each time, they have failed.”
“Part of the reason ... they have failed is we have not been able to bring Democrats, Republicans together to get it done,” he said “That's what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are. ... I am absolutely committed to making sure that anybody in America who needs health care is going to get it”
Mr. Obama managed to work in political shots aimed at the two front-runners for the Republican nomination. He railed on Sen. John McCain of Arizona for opposing the Bush tax cuts initially but now saying he would extend them.
“Somewhere along the line, the Straight Talk Express lost some wheels,” he said.
He also mocked former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has said both Democrats are not qualified because they haven't managed a business like he has. Mr. Obama noted that Mr. Romney, a multimillionaire who is in second place, “hasn't gotten a very good return on his investment” in his presidential campaign.
Both candidates said they would end the tax cuts for the wealthy, with Mr. Obama saying, “I'm not bashful about it” because many from the “pretty well-dressed crowd” in the Kodak Theater - which was built to host the Academy Awards and had numerous Hollywood luminaries attending - could probably afford it.
