There were no computers in 1961. Pages were manually created on a Linotype machine. While it did a very good job, there were variations from line to line and word to word.

It would be much more interesting if all the letters were perfectly typeset.

You are missing the point. I’m not suggesting that the “doctoring” happened in 1961. Hell, it could have happened in 2003. Where did these copies come from? microfiche? or did someone actually have a paper?
