pgkdan: You’re thinking rationally. This whole odyssey is about the irrational.

Problem is due to campaign finance reform laws she won’t be running for President. At best she can start an exploratory committee, but if she chose to run for President now the money she raises would be subject to the law.

Absolutely, Palin will have the moral high ground. She’s making an appearance on Aug 8, yes? The media would’ve said she was neglecting her duties as Gov. Now they can’t.

Sarah’s term would have expired in a year. There’s no good reason she couldn’t have finished and THEN ran for 2012.

In the 10 months since the national election, 15 spurious ethics complaints have racked up a personal legal debt of a half million dollars. Dollars the Palins don't have.

Resigning from office stops the ethics complaints, stops the finanacial hemorrhage and allows her to earn the necessary income to pay off the debt.

It also frees her up to go on the stump and attack, attack, attack from every stump and podium in fly-over country, where personal contact and meet and greets will put the lie to media portrayals of her and her family.

Libtards and the media made a serious miscalculation with the ethics complaints and harrassment of her family.

I certainly wish her well but I fear this was a mistake. Here’s hoping I’m wrong!

I don’t know...it can go either way. You know sometimes one has to take a step back to move forward. She was a lightning rod for her state and as such she showed great valor and courage stepping down so her state could move forward.

The NRO website has a symposium on the subject and John Pitney points out another financial reason:

Does Palin Have a Political Future?
NRO on what comes next for the governor.

"Her family has little money, and frivolous ethics charges have left her with huge legal bills. Even if a defense fund pays most of the tab, she faces other obligations. Trig may need help for the rest of his life. To provide for it, Palin needs to set aside a lot of money, and paid speeches may allow her to do so over the next couple of years."

That right there, is valid reason enough. I think she totally made the right call.
