Some years ago, I read a book “1857” that noted that just before the civil war, things got physical in congress.

A few years after that, a very wise old man told me, “When you see congress break out in a fight or two, civil war is not far away”.

Makes me wonder.

Yes, the beating of Charles Sumner by Preston Brooks may have been the tipping point for John Brown.
