I guess that long-winded non-answer means you need a hint. Here it is: In 1608 Hans Lippershey invented the first refracting telescope and then used it to observe distant objects.

Here’s your next question. See if you can get this one:

In 1620 Cornelis Drebbel invented the first human-powered submarine.

Do you think he used it submerge-and-go, or do you think he dared people to make bets with him that he could get 3 peer-reviewed papers to confirm his invention?
