Video of the events before John Ziegler was detained at USC, his clash with security and Press Relations, he blows holes in their arguments in seconds..

I have no idea. I didn't go to USC. I graduated from one of it's arch rivals. I imagine it gets project-specific grant money from the state and federal government like many, if not all, private schools.
On almost every thread I see your responses, you seem to be supporting a liberal point of view. Just sayin’. Are you aware this is a publicly funded university?
at 4:27, watch the guy in the background do a victory pose. it'd be interesting to find out who that was. my guess would be someone's press secretary
meanwhile... what right does a security guard have to handcuff and detain someone on a public sidewalk?
Wrong. It's a private school. Look it up. I don't see how you can claim that I guy has a right to disobey a law enforcement officer a "liberal" point of view. USC is private property. Private property owners have an inherent right to determine who can or cannot be on their property. Ziegler was wrong. Period.
Just because I'm a conservative, it doesn't make me a hypocrite. Apparently the same can't be said for you.
You need to read the whole thread. The security guard isn't a security guard - He's a USC cop - just like LAPD, LA County Sherrif or CHips. I know, because in college, I was given a citation during a football game and had to pay it at the LA COUNTY COURTHOUSE. They're real cops, with real guns, real badges, real ticket books and real guns.
Secondly, Zeigler isn't on the sidewalk. A sidewalk is concrete locate on the easement of a private piece of property. Zeigler is in the walkway to the building. I've actually stood where he is standing, is some distance from the street. I imagine it's there he was told he could film.
ok, so USC isn’t a state school (funny name)... meanwhile, what right does ANYONE have to handcuff and detain someone on PRIVATE property?
so i’m well within my rights to handcuff the next person that comes into my yard? how long can i detain them? obviously i must be allowed to rough them up a bit... any limits?
basically, your 4th amendment rights get suspended on private property? good to know.
that can come in handy if i find myself in a kathy bates/misery situation...
I thought that too
OK, try this out tonight. Go have a few bears and walk, don't drive, to a neighbors house that you don't know and set up a lawn chair in their front yard. Wait for the police to show up and after they ask you to leave, and you don't, let me know if they place you in handcuffs and forcibly remove you from the yard. I'm guessing that's exactly what will happen.
You have a right to free speech and you have a right to peaceably assemble - on public property, not on private property.
Like I said in an earlier post, I'm sympathetic to Ziegler positions, and Annenberg School was wrong not to credential him for the event, but he has to follow the law, just like anyone else.
Ziegler was being an idiot. Watch the video. He was purposely annoying everyone there, going out of his way to create a confrontation and they called him on it.
not taking it for granted... i just called the campus police @ USC (213/740-6000). i asked the lady that answered if i was speaking with the campus police for USC (yes) and whether or not they are affiliated with the state (no). are they a private security firm? (yes) and what is the name of that firm? (USC public safety)
so... general private security guard (ie: average person with a gun) and detain/bind/hassle/mug anyone they want.
according to this (link), the PUBLIC university of california schools are policed by state officers... correct. BUT, the private schools, like USC as you pointed out, "employ their own private security officers or contract with private security services"

I have no idea what idiot you spoke with on a Saturday at USC. I promise you the gentleman in the video are DEPUTIZED, DULY SWORN STATE OF CALIFORNIA LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS.
They have the same right to arrest, detain, search with appropriate warrants or suspicion as any cop in the state of California. Did you not go to college? I too went to a private school. We had campus POLICE, deputized by the state, but paid for by the University.
Also, I'm guessing that USC also has security guards, so the lady you spoke with could be confused. But, the guys in the video are campus POLICE. USC even has a holding cell.
And, while were at it, yes, private security guards can detain or remove people. Try to grab a few chips off a casino table and see what happens. Or, make a scene in the bar tonight and find out what the bouncers do to you.
It's private property. They asked Zeigler to leave. Ziegler didn't. They removed him. Ziegler's lucky he didn't get arrested.
Katie’s eyebrows make her look mean.
I'm a conservative in the image of Goldwater and Buckley. Occasionally, I bump heads with the purely orthodox social conservatives. Perhaps that's where you and I are seeing some friction.
Department of Public Safety
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the central coordinating office for law enforcement and security programs at the university. DPS is open 24 hours a day and is responsible for the deployment of all personnel on and around the university campuses. DPS is one of the largest campus law enforcement agencies in the nation.
DPS is charged with the protection of life and property and should be called to report any emergency situation, including serious accidents, crimes, suspicious circumstances, fires or safety hazards. Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Los Angeles Police Department, armed USC public safety officers have powers of arrest and patrol the campus and off-campus areas in vehicles, on bicycles and on foot. Public safety officers conduct preliminary investigations facilitating the investigative process with local law enforcement.
Unarmed community service officers patrol all university-owned residential facilities and monitor the access control/alarm systems at these buildings 24 hours a day. Unarmed student officers assigned to the Trojan Student Officer Program are responsible for promoting bicycle safety, enforcing campus and state bicycle regulations and deterring bicycle theft.
Other services performed by DPS include: the provision of a wide variety of written materials on crime prevention; presentation of crime and rape awareness seminars; security surveys of offices and apartments on or near both the University Park and Health Sciences campuses; bicycle registration; and personal property identification. For more information, call the Crime Prevention and Community Education Unit at (213) 743-1730.
The primary goal of DPS is to provide a safe and secure environment in which the social and academic endeavors of the university community may be fully realized. To achieve this goal, the department needs students cooperation and support in reporting incidents, taking advantage of the services the department provides and complying with basic crime prevention practices.
DPS publishes an annual security report that includes crime information for the previous three calendar years. The report is available for viewing online at capsnet.usc.edu/dps/asr.

In short, they're cops.
caps won't make you right, son.
according to this link on USC's own site (link):
"Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Los Angeles Police Department, armed USC public safety officers have powers of arrest and patrol the campus and off-campus areas in vehicles, on bicycles and on foot."
they are not deputies. they are private security guards which the LAPD have granted the power to arrest.
Semantics SON. They're cops for ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES. SON.
I look forward to hearing how your social experiments go tonight.
However, Charlie Gibson blew me away. I never saw him act in this manner before. Don't think I will again as I don't watch GMA anymore. His behavior was uncalled for.
In fact, I am wondering why I have Cable TV anymore. 57 channels and nothing on.
