Kind of a chilly time for that, in NorCal. Even in SoCal (Santa Barbara) I didn't become a beach-bum-student until around April or so -- towards the end of my senior year when I could coast because by design I'd already completed all the "heavy" classes and had only fluff to deal with.
("Fluff", ya sure. "Public Speaking" was one of those -- I hated it, I feared it, but now it's a significant part of my job.)
Um. Let me put my engineer's hat back on (was it ever off? -- don't answer that)...
"If a soft one can make fire, what can a hard one do?"
A bigger fire?
The beaches were gravel. They were very pretty, in a stark kind of way.
Given time, when the tide was out, it wasn’t too bad to inch my way along the coast.
Matter of fact, I wouldn’t mind doing it again. If I could get back up...
Make water?
I remember opening a soda pop for my parents using a proper old can opener. Some times I even used one to open whole cans of food....they were brilliant. Start punching, and punch around the top until the whole top was off. It may have left a sharp lid and can, but it worked every time.
....outfitted with various unsuccessful pop-tops, some of which would slice open a finger.
LOL, some of us are probably not recognizable from our birth fingerprints because of those things.
You developed the skills you needed to cope with it. To succeed, one must learn how to do the things that don't come naturally. I'm still working on it. ;-)
These campouts are really enjoyable, meeting or renewing relationships with folks from a lot of our other churches in the Western states in a totally informal setting.
As do we all. I played bagpipes. I will again.
My state must have been prescient. The birth record has footprints.
Given the chance-opportunity-instance, we all rise to the “being” that is within us.
I never spoke to more than seven people in my life, until two years ago, when I was faced with speaking to a congregation of 200+ for 15 minutes.
I wasn’t “ready” but I did it. And if I can do it, ANYone can!!
My state must have been prescient. The birth record has footprints.
I walk on fire if I were you...anything to keep yourself safe from the state.
So did Nevada, but there was only one copy...for the parents. When I married, mine was given to me, but it has since “disappeared.” I suspect I know exactly where it went, and who took it, though not the time.
Pretty sucky...it’s the only time in my life that my feet were “cute!”
And so...Yours Truly is off to bed.
Take care and I’ll see y’all tomorrow!!!
You’re right.
We can do what we need to do.
1,333!
Have a good night!
G’Night.
"Drills" is the correct answer. Bow drills to be specific.
A bow drill is like a toy bow as in bow and arrow. In this case, the "arrow" is twisted around the bowstring, so that when you "saw" with the bow, it spins the arrow.
Now put a seashell on top of the "arrow" to place your hand on, and use the point of the arrow to grind away at the thing you want a hole in.
If you split the arrow and put a bit of sharp rock into the split, then bind it, you will have a serviceable bit to drill with.
You can make holes in seashells, or make buttons out of pieces of bone, and so forth.
The place where the "arrow" is rubbing get hot. That's why a piece of seashell or rock will protect your hand. The work you do generates heat, especially if the drill is dull.
So you can use this same bow drill as a device for generating heat, and if you do it right, with the right materials, you can start a fire.
Yup. Tried that a couple of decades ago. Rather a bit of a learning curve to get there, but once learned not all that difficult.
Bowdril? I used a mandrel when I was making jewelry.
