Well, it was there. People thought 8 years of clinton had just about destroyed america beyond repair and that we had only one hope. The NRA pulled through for us and got us bush...by a nose. Then 911 happened and we were again on the verge of total collapse of freedom and liberty. When 2004 elections came along, people thought we just barely squeeked by and bush merely bought us a 4 year stay of execution. But if he loses in ‘04, that’s it. Finis.
Now we have obama. Kinda puts all that stuff in perspective. The way we thought clinton had ruined america...HA...doesn’t even compare to obama. I’d gladly take slick willie now, and thank him for displacing obama.

A little more explanation? For years now? I wont attack if you say Bush caused that.
Bush didn't cause it, he continued it. The attacks on the Bill of Rights are almost as old as the country. Most recently, however, the drug war resulted in massive increases in police power. In some areas, they can seize your property on mere suspicion that "drugs" are somehow involved. Carnivore and massive new NSA spying started under Clinton. And the "patriot" act was a knee jerk response to 9/11. Actually, there wasn't much in the patriot act that wasn't requested by the Janet Reno justice department ten years earlier. Had Al Gore suggested the patriot act, I think the reaction to it here would have been much different.
But that's all water under the bridge now. People get the government they want and the level of freedom they want. I hope that eventually people start valuing liberty again.

"The attacks on the Bill of Rights are almost as old as the country. Most recently, however, the drug war resulted in massive increases in police power."It's impossible for some to realize that sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. The WOD not only resulted in increases in police power, but also in police and official corruption. We've come to accept unprecedented levels of surveillance in our society. We've also succeeded in making some of the scummiest people on earth wealthy, and their lifestyles something that young people try to emulate. The only thing that hasn't been accomplished, is putting a dent in people's willingness to purchase and use that crap. The lessons of history...(George Santayana please pick-up the white courtesy phone).

Just thinking about Orwell’s 1984, and had there been a second term for Jimmy Carter.
Orwell might have been right had Reagan not won.

The
technology of
Nineteen Eighty-four is actually here now, but it is not being used to the same degree as INGSOC.
Not even close.

No, this isn’t 1984.
If it was 1984, your post would never have been seen by anyone... and you would be undergoing ‘re-education’ at this very moment.

IF we have elections in 2010. I could see this guy using a “crisis” to suspend them and bring in martial law.... I’m not saying that will happen, just that I could see him doing it. Remember Rom’s statement about not letting a crisis go to waste....

Maybe with 100% and 100% turnout, like Saddam’s last election....

With the recent snitch site from the white house for anyone who may be sending e-mails about socialized medicine things are looking more and more like 1984.
