LOL, I remember once McCain bragging that he won by 70%, what he didn't say was that he was running unopposed.

McCain's margins have always been substantial, 60, 56, 69, 76. Starkey was a weak candidate but McCain was not unopposed. Pederson decided to go after the weaker Kyl.

This used to be a solid republican state.

Not since territorial days. Remember Carl Hayden (D) was Senator from 1927 to 1969. Republicans and Democrats have been about evenly divided in the Senate and Governorship since WWII. You are remembering things that never were.

Yes I do remember old Carl and the democrats were very conservative. Even old Raul Castro was not a flaming liberal. Bruce Babbett was about as liberal as I have ever seen around here, but this state was rock solid conservative. If you read what I said above, we rotated on governors etc. but they were not flaming liberals. McCain has managed to exist because he’s corrupt, everyone knows it, that’s why he won’t even come to face his constituants. When he does he’s nasty. Why do you think that he barely carried his own state in a presidentia election? LOL, because he’s so loved? If it wasn’t for Sarah, he wouldn’t have gotten 20% of the vote.

And BTW, there were many times he was “unopposed” and he got far less votes then the republicans running for other offices. Many people just couldn’t stomach voting for him. It was always a real kick to watch the returns come in.

Back in the Goldwater years, you folks probably slaughtered the opposition.

Goldwater's first Senate term was won from Ernest McFarland in a surprising and narrow upset. His last, he won by +/- 5000 votes. He then graciously told the voters that they could "Go to Hell". Goldwater was never extremely popular in Arizona.

"I disagree with that.. It is in our NATION’s best intrest to preserve the two-party system. A strong 3rd party will only reduce the number of votes needed to win the MAJORITY. That my FRiend is a more serious problem for a lot of reasons IMHO."
I agree. I cannot help but wonder if more Republicans, non partisan conservatives, and conservative oriented Democrats would have voted for Pain and Sarrah, we would not be facing what we are now. We of course would still have had all the RINOS, but we could be working at finding new blood. Now where screwed.

I’ll be darned. I thought he was. Thanks.

Was it his father that was a very popular guy in the state, or have I been feed a line by the media?

When the Left took over our schools and education system over 20 years ago, they stopped educating our youth and mainly indoctrinated them. Now that the product of that indoctrination has come of voting age, it will take another generation or two to turn it around. As these brainwashed, primordial, evolutionary amoebas grow up and learn about the real World, way too much valuable time will have been lost. There is also, no spiritual or moral base left among them that will give them inspiration.

You've hit the nail firmly on the head. It is liberal indoctrination -- both in our public school systems and by the mainstream media -- that has caused this leftward shift in our country.

unfortunately, the hardships created by a recession or depression might be the only thing to wake up the ignorant masses and show them that socialism will not work, has never worked, and is only an illusion for the non-thinking.

Excellent responses. If said exactly what I was thinking, only more eloquently.

Even old Raul Castro was not a flaming liberal.

Wow. That's the first time I've ever heard Raul described as anything but a flaming liberal.

McCain has managed to exist because he’s corrupt,

That is a flat out lie. This is the first year that I have ever supported McCain but I have never, ever seen him do anything that was even marginally corrupt. Back in about '98 he was coming very close to the edge when we started chewing on him. He backed off immediately. I don't think that he even realized how close he came.

Goldwater’s family has been entwined in Arizona history from the beginning. His grandfather had stores in Ehrenburg on the Colorado and in Prescott. His father, Baron Goldwater, expanded the stores. The Goldwater name was well known but I don’t think that they would have won any popularity contests.

Which times were those? I don't seem to recall them.

Yesh, well, I'll give you that one, but still not by todays standards, not by a long shot.

As to McCain not being corrupt, just look in the FreeRepublic archives and you'll find out more then you ever thought possible. He could play innocent all he wanted, and he fooled a lot of people, but how dumb would you have to be not to know you shouldn't be accepting "vacations" with a major developer? He's always been available for the highest bidder and hasn't represented this state in years.

He lost, he basically threw the election because he wouldn't fight, but he sure is first in line to fight republicans.

Thank you. I appreciate it. Sometimes I do go over the top a bit, and I probably did some of that on this thread. I call ‘em like I see ‘em, and that’s not always the best thing to do. That is what I was thinking. You take care.

know there are many very good, hardworking Republicans in congress and they deserve more respect than they're getting

I think most Republicans in the House in the last Congress were still quite conservative. However, they ran into the problem of being associated with -- by party -- with the RINOs in the Senate that were passing amnesty year after year, with the RINO in the White House that was pushing amnesty and spending, and with the RINO presidential candidate was associated more with liberal policies that with conservative ones.

We will never win as long as we are infested with these types. The bad press they get affects every other Republican. Not to mention, many are at the top level in the party and do all they can to squash the Conservatives that are left.

if we could find a good conservative candidate, we should be in good standing to win back some seats and the White House because the economy will be even more damaged after Obama has implemented more socialist programs and more spending out of control. A real conservative message will appeal to most (or perhaps I'm giving too much credit to people's ability to use logic and think).

Actually, I think it is the best thing to do. Honesty is still an integral part of having character.

"I like JD really well, he's a good solid man and he'd be a great senator, but like I said earlier, we are being over run by liberals lately and the higher the unemployment goes in CA the more we are inundated."

CA is becoming a black hole. Schwartzeneggar wants to raise taxes NOW? This should be liberal Heaven here! What kind of jobs are liberals doing there? I can get a job at Raytheon in Tucson because I know what they build and the engineers that do it - even if there is no posted opening. Those aren't liberals. Countries are scared and are signing contracts for things that make great big accurate BOOMs.

So, are your migrating liberals working in coffee shops, massage parlors, porn shops or what?

(I have a secure job. Just planning an escape if the time comes.)

The RNC is wrongly following Bush’s ideologizing of the right. His “trade with anyone (others are isolationists)” mantra will get him so real Nazi call time. The GOP is in bed with Chinese trade, which is in bed with flooding us with cash to revolutionary instruments for ACORN and Manchurian Maoistic Obama. The stimulus bill smacks also of Stalinist potemkin North Korean kind.

So they can ask for money from their Chinese “friends” if they are such good friends of theirs and us not, is what I would say. Perhaps they don’t understand that waging failure and with chaos is not a wise idea.

Let me see now, a young feller with big ambitions catches the eye of a major hard-driving businessman with an excellent reputation. The businessman introduces him around, supports him and sponsors him helps him win a house seat. The young feller does a pretty good job and then a Senate seat opens up.

Well the major businessman goes into overdrive. Raises money, donates money, promotes the guy everywhere, becomes really good friends with the Congressman and his family. The congressman wins the Senate seat.

Then things go to hell for the businessman. He buys a company that's a bit shaky in the foundations. Things get worse. He asks the congressman, now Senator, for help. The Senator does a little but draws a clear line that he will do nothing unethical. The businessman goes under. Thousands of jobs and millions and millions of dollars are lost.

Name that Senator.

Hint: Senator Jon Kyl
