Time after time, in spite of being right on the issue, Bush sat back and let his enemies define him and his policies. Surrogates can only do so much, and who wants to be a surrogate for someone unwilling to stand up for themselves very often? Conservatism became a thing to shy away from, having no elected leader or defender.

You are soooooooo right.That was the Bush problem and is the Republican party's problem.I believe the democratic party feels,the Conservative Americans will complain,perhaps not vote.But what else can we do.We are not like minorities who protest ,intimidate others etc etc.Is the conservative powerless now ? I believe many think so.I was defending Bush to someone yesterday and they said sure he was a good President with his 20% rating,and that is a fact.Obama's is 80%.
