Operation Greylord

Operation Greylord was an investigation conducted jointly with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division into corruption in the judiciary of Cook County, Illinois (the Chicago region).
The operation took place in the 1980s. Ninety-two people were indicted, including 17 judges, 48 lawyers, ten deputy sheriffs, eight policemen, eight court officials, and a member of the Illinois Legislature

Ald. Edward M. Burke is chairman of the Chicago City Council’s powerful Finance Committee. He also runs a small law firm, Klafter & Burke, that specializes in appeals of property assessments. Burke gets a cut of what clients save in lowered property taxes. Burke reported having 37 law clients that did business with the city last year. Each paid him at least $5,000.

It is difficult to forget the memorable quotes from the recordings obtained by the DOJ. Cook County judge: “Show me the f*****ing money and I’ll show you f*****ing justice!”
