The Iowa Supreme Court has heard arguments from homosexuals in a challenge to the state's marriage laws.
Douglas Lapier, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund, argued against homosexual marriage." "For over 170 years in Iowa, marriage has been defined as a union between one man and one woman," he explains. "It's [a] well-settled law in the state of Iowa."
Lapier notes that a member of the court asked the pro-homosexual attorney what would happen in terms of polygamy and incestuous marriage if the court ruled in favor of homosexual marriage.
"The plaintiffs simply could not satisfactorily answer that question, which means that there is a great risk that if they open up the doors to same-sex marriage in Iowa, there's no telling what they're opening up their doors to next," he contends.
The case is now in the hands of the court, which is supposed to act as a referee and apply law, according to Lapier. "The Supreme Court of Iowa has to decide whether or not they have any business in deciding the definition of marriage as a matter of public policy, or if that should be left to the legislature and the people of Iowa," he concludes.
Last August, a Polk County judge legalized homosexual marriage for four hours before issuing a stay pending a higher-court decision.
This isn't the Iowa I lived in most of my life.
Grew up there and it sure has changed. IMO the decades long govt handouts have had a lot to do with the distinct socialist tilt there now.
Most people in Iowa haven’t see a gay pride parade or pictures of the street festivals. So they still accept it in the live and let live spirit.

Hopefully my wife’s uncle who’s the pastor at Grace church in Altoona will be all over this...
Logical question, What about Polygamy, What about Insetral marrige, What about animals for that matter?
That’s a good church.

That’s the point about polygamy; under their definition it could be any group married...in any number. Thus, in fact one can destroy the concept of marriage by broadening it to include everything under the sun.
The lawyer’s name is actually Doug Napier. He’s a personal friend and a darn good lawyer too.

I’ve heard many of the gay marriage supporters use those exact comparisons. If thats what they want to do, its ok.
Sadly, I think Iowa is becoming the new Vermont.
If some old lady leaves her fortune to her cat(s) (which has happened before), somebodys gotta take care of the little furball, and better for someone that actually likes (or at least tollerates) cats to be the one to take care of it.
Dude, I hope your using protection.
Iowa has a lot of transplants, many associated with the Universities and colleges. Many of these people bring their liberal elitist views and spread it in the name of education.
The press is gannett almost exclusively and the editorial boards of the Des Moines Register, Iowa City Press Citizen and others are very vocally for “equal rights” for gays although they already have the same right as anybody else (to marry someone of the opposite sex).
This whole thing is a Lambda Legal activism exercise. They came to Iowa and recruited the “plaintiff” couples in 2005.
I hope the supreme court rules against the plaintiffs or that somehow it will come for a vote. Most people in Iowa are against “gay marriage” however, would be for “civil unions” for same-sex couples. But that’s not good enough for the activists. They want the word “marriage”.
