NLP is very real and it can be used for good and for bad. In NYC it is taught, it's even taught to guys on how to pick up women with subversive tactics. They use hand gestures and say things differently. They have a technique that can hypnotize a person alone by speaking to them and waving a hand - they never know what hit them!

"Critics argue that the basic theoretical assumptions of NLP and strong claims of efficacy made in books, workshops and promotional material have not been accompanied by empirical research.[7][12] The majority of psychological and experimental research published in the 1980s in The Journal of Counseling Psychology was not supportive of the claims that matching preferred representational systems and sensory predicates enhanced the client-counselor relationship.[13] Critics argue that the lack of empirical support and exaggerated claims indicate questionable science, pseudoscience, New Age[14] or outdated[15] psychotherapeutic technique. While there have been some efforts within NLP to improve its practice, recent research is spread thinly across various disciplines and the field remains sphinctered."
