The Conservative Snoot Brigade Turns on Palin . . . and the Base
North Star Writers Group ^ | October 20, 2008 | Dan Calabrese

It’s erupted. Sensing losses of historic proportions, conservatives seem not to be waiting for the official results to start dividing into camps. And while Sarah Palin is the nominal reason for the schism, you can see by digging a little deeper that she’s only a symbol.

A certain faction of the conservative punditry has now gone pedal-to-the-metal in its disdain for Palin. The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan – who was the first of the right’s chattering classes to turn full-bore against President Bush – last week joined the likes of Kathleen Parker, Heather MacDonald, David Brooks and a host of others in excoriating Palin for little more than the manner in which she expresses herself.

An interesting complaint, this. If a vice president’s (or president’s) job is to express oneself eloquently, by all means vote for Barack Obama. Palin’s substantive appeal arises from the manner in which she has governed Alaska.

Olympia Snowe? Where’s the barf alert for this thread?

I live in Maine and I can tell you, if McCain had picked Olympia Snowe as his running mate, I would be staying home on election day.

Sarah Palin spoke at an Air National Guard Hanger at Bangor International Airport in Bangor, Maine last Thursday morning. Sarah’s 40 minute speech was televised on the local ABC affiliate, but not on CBS or NBC.

Anyway, before Sarah spoke, Olympia Snowe droned on and on in her annoying voice for 20 minutes! Meanwhile, Sarah was standing on the stage, patiently waiting for Snowe to shut her damn pie hole. I was yelling at the TV, shut up, Olympia! The crowd wants to hear Sarah, NOT you! Now granted, Snowe was saying good things about John McCain, but thousands of people had lined up for hours in the early morning cold to hear Gov. Palin, not the RINO Olympia Snowe.

As I watched Snowe drone on, all I could think was Olympia Snowe has more in common with Barack Obama than Sarah Palin.

Sarah’s speech was great, as usual. At one point she asked veterans to raise their hands, and then turned her body in all directions and repeatedly thanked them.

They decided early on that McCain was going to lose this thing. Not a Republican year, and all that rot. But John McCain did not get into this race to lose, and he will not go down quietly. The country-clubbers will never forgive him for that.

I have said all along that a deal was struck that this is the Republican's turn to lose. These corrupt people that we keep electing to Washington, don't want to lose their power so they make these deals with each other to keep themselves there forever. This is what is wrong with our government - these people have roosted there so long that they have completely lost touch with the American people.

The chicken-$hit Republican party has seen that bad things are coming down as a result of the way that they & the dems have run things & they don't want to be associated with it. I don't think McCain the "maverick" is in their little clique right now & so he is their sacrificial lamb. That's the only way I can explain the events that have led to us having John McCain as our nominee. I think you are right - McCain isn't in it to lose & when he picked Sarah Palin that turned the elite's world upside-down.

That wasn't supposed to happen! We have to keep praying more than we ever have in our lives. God threw Sarah Palin in the mix, and now he's given us Joe the Plumber. We have to keep up the fight & not give up - the American people can win this thing.

The fact that these RINOS hate Sarah Palin so much, makes me love her that much more.

I agree. I'd love to see Sarah as president. IMO she would make common-sense decisions.

Publius, I’m with you. I keep thinking of Andrew Jackson, and for that matter, Abe Lincoln and all the other back-woods folks. Give me common sense, straight-thinking, tangle-tongued people who know how to get the work done, and I will vote for them over a snotty Harvard brat any day.

And while we’re at it, let’s put those New York Fire Department guys in the Senate, (from the Nextel ad).

THEN we can get things done right.

I have been thinking much the same thing.

Maybe a nice landslide will happen and these RINO’s will be swept off the bluff in their beach houses and we won’t have to deal with them any more.

You are so right. If we can get our turnout in the 55% to 60% range, we will win this election in a landslide (that goes for the House & Senate too).

Does any of these country-clubbers think the vote would be anywhere near as close as it is if McCain had selected the acceptable-to-them Olympia Snowe?

I don't think they care. It's more important to these snots to have a candidate who regularly throws out Emily Dickinson quotes on the campaign trail.

A lot of conservative Repubs stayed home in 2006. They keep thinking if the Dems mess it up badly enough then a Reagan will reappear. The Dems will turn America into Michigan with the Saudis man Obama.

The Saudis also own Colin Powell.

What the hell is the North Star Writers Group? Sounds like it is composed of a herd of Birkenstock-wearing, bean sprout-eating, tofu-slurping, limp-wristed fantasizers, wholly enamored with themselves.

Peggy Noonan would probably say that the Gipper’s greatness came from his good sense to “listen to her”, something that we in the great unwashed masses refuse to do.

It also gets her goat that we don't need her and her fellow members of the chattering class for information.

I think that we need to reassess where the GOP is going, and either do what Move On did with the Dims and take over the joint, or agree that it's been fun, but we'll see 'ya around the campus. Me personally, I believe that an amicable divorce is probably the best approach-let them come and court our votes instead of taking them for granted. There's nothing wrong with interest group politics-it got us Sarah Palin, after all.

You’ve nailed it eloquently. People like Brooks, Will, Kristol, etc. are just the “house conservatives” or “Potemkin conservatives” of the Leftmedia. They are mere tokens kept on board so the MSM can claim they are “open to other views.” These “nuanced” intellectual pundits know they will have their jobs even if the Demonrats win every election. (At least until the Marxists set up their concentration camps for everyone to the right of Mao and Pol Pot.)

“I’ve said this before — something I’m really really sick of, that keeps appearing here on Free Republic in comments on Gov. Palin: the notion that she has to “grow.” It’s a word that means nothing, & is a sop to the Noonan’s & libs in this world. If we want Palin to grow, don’t we wish even more fervently that Obama would “grow”? What about Biden? For that matter, what about poor crazed Peggy Noonan? Do we want Palin quoting Niebuhr, to give a tingle up Brooks’ trousers? Who is she growing for? Why? To get more nuanced about life issues? Iraq and foreign policy? Gay marriage? Do we think she’s too direct in the way she expresses herself, and needs a little more around-Robin-Hood’s-barn articulation, more like (say) Biden?”

Amen. Whenever a so called conservative Freeper posts the hit pieces from these Rino Beltway A$$holes without a disclaimer, we need to be all over them.

I gave up on these elite phoney Republicans in 1992. They get paychecks for appearing on ABCNNBCBS as worthless and spineless Republicans.

George Will, Noonan and the rest of these Benedict Arnolds are so out of touch with the rest of us, they have morphed into Rats pretending to be Republicans.

I think we should keep a list of all those “alleged” conservatives who have turned tail and shown what they are really about. I will vow now not to support them, buy any stuff they may endorse, read their stuff or ever support them in any way.

Peggy Noonan

Colin Powell

Davis Brooks

Just a start, feel free to add your own.

It sure is in our personal lives, life outside the family, on TV/Radio and in the lying Fishwraps, and here on Free Republic.

“There needs to be a big purge after the election.”

Why wait.

Boycott these RinoA$$es and never watch any tv program or screaming liberal heads with one of them as the token Republican on ABCNBCBS.

Cancel any subscriptions we might have to their mags and news letters.

Whenever a suspect Freeper posts their anti John/Sarah garbage without a disclaimer, treat that poster like the Amish do to their traitors.
