Okay, FRiends. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I need a distraction from Obamamania. Anybody care to debate the top ten rock & roll bands?
Not necessarily personal favorites, but in terms of influence, endurance and popularity.
I think the top four, in no particular order, would have to include:
The Doors
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
George Strait and the Ace In The Hole Band.
Anything or group after “the day the music died” ain’t R’n’R. Bill Haley and the Comets, the black groups that were covered by Pat Boone and others, were the best.
Don't forget The Zombies, and Beau Brummel. Beau Brummel played, when I saw them, in a small venue (less than 2000) and it sounded great and they had great vocals.
Not trying to start a pissing contest here...
The Beatles were an awesome band and are generally acknowledged as the Greatest...

I’d say that’s probably as good as most choices for a short list.
Although they were not around nearly as long as Led Zep, I am leaning towards Cream instead for the influence and endurance. What band has lasted a year and a half and left such a mark? What would we be saying right now about Led Zep if they had ceased to exist after that length of time?
I do have some problems with Led Zep’s ethical standards as regards not crediting the use of other’s music. That of course is not really a factor in evaluating their popularity and influence.
Well, we all have our dates when “the music died”, that range between 1958, and, say, 1975, , but certainly, many of the pretentious and the inept (Chicago? Grand Funk Railroad? Pleeze!) listed above, have as much relation to rock’n’roll as Pat Boone, if not less.

Definitely Steve Howe YES. However, I thought Rabin brought some much needed new life to the group at the time he joined them. He helped them to have “hits”.
But when I think of YES, I think of the earlier years.

I was wondering when the Beach Boys would get a mention. In terms of influence, they have to be on the list.
It’s funny, to hear other musicians talk about them, Abba was a hugely influential band. Which just goes to show that in art, “influential” doesn’t necessarily mean “good.” (Although I do like a couple of their songs quite a bit.)

Oh yeah, the Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Radiohead all have been influenced. In fact, if the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, why, the Dave Clark Five had been listening to the equivalents in the 50s of the lowest common denominator lists above, you'd never have heard of them. We are really exploring the bottom of the barrel here, the most popular, the least interesting, the lame. Ask the influencers who they listen to! Certainly not to the Grand Funk Railroad!

Second, most underrated rock band, Journey. And I don’t mean the cheezy Open Arms and Faithfully, I mean the early “Just the same way” and other great ‘unknowns’ (known,but not anthems”, unless you count “Don’t stop believing” an anthem.
Mock me if you like, but those are my two choices.

Second, most underrated rock band, Journey. And I don’t mean the cheezy Open Arms and Faithfully, I mean the early “Just the same way” and other great ‘unknowns’ (known,but not anthems”, unless you count “Don’t stop believing” an anthem.

I ignored that one for about ten years figuring if the critics liked it it must suck. Gosh was that a mistake. It’s a great album.
