You are assuming two things:
A. That ‘Renegade Annie’ saw an M.D. and informed him she was PG and soon to be sashaying off to Kenya.
B. That today’s African travel recommendations by the CDC were applicabele in 1960.
Assuming that they were, here’s todays recommendations by the CDC:
MMR
DPT
Polio
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Typhoid
Yellow Fever
Malarials
Here’s the reality of 1960:
Ann would have already had the childhood diseases or been vaccinated for the 40’s-50’s variations of MMR & DPT if they were available.
And the others:
Polio- 1962; HepA-1996; HepB-1965; and Typhoid-2001.
Yellow Fever did not reach Kenya until 1992.
Malaria, they used DEET spray, anti-Malarials like Lariam (1963) were used in late 60’s. And, btw, they do prescribe anti-malarrials to PG women.
If she was relying on Obama Senior for advice, somehow his background does not inspire confidence that he was the ‘cautious’ type that would have dissuaded his bonnie bride from the risks of travel to Kenya. After all, the guy had apparently never heard of a condom (1955, possibly true) which unfortunately explains why we’re in this predictment in 2009. And two years later, senior did persuade yet another young American white woman, Ruth Nidesand, to ditch her Harvard education and American life to reside in Africa and produce two more Obama offspring.
It is plausible, especially if she was in adamant disagreement with her parents and was given money to reside elsewhere. It also explains Kezia’s comment (#1 wife) on how “she had gotten to know Ann like a sister.” Unless Ann went to Kenya with Barry after Senior’s death, when would the ‘sistah’ relationship have possibly developed?
Good points, and I figured there weren’t the same number of vaxes required then; Ann could not have said she was preg and if she wasn’t showing how would the doc know. Also could have gone a non-direct route and avoided the vax thing.
You could buy them in gas stations in '55, as well in '60 and '61, just like you sometimes still can. They just weren't on the shelf of the Walgreens, Kresge's, or the local "drug store".
Condoms are centuries old technology. Although lubricated ones only go back to the mid '50 or so. (Not all condoms are made of "rubber", or other artificial material).
