As a mixed-race child in Hawaii, Barack Obama has always stood out. A portrait of the potential president as a young man.

Walk any street, visit any establishment or shopping center in Hawaii and you'll see Hapa-Haole, Hapa-Pake, Hapa-this or that. In Obama's case, he's both Hapa-Haole and Hapa-Popolo, which doesn't necessarily make him stand out except in national politics.

I know many kids, friends and playmates of my son who are Hapa-something. One like Obama is Hapa-Haole-Popolo is now a United States Marine.

He's got a good head on his shoulders and good sensibilities. More that can be said for some.
