Whatever his status GW and the guys made doggone sure someone like him would never be able to become President - check out the 14 years a resident ~ I think that neatly excised renegade UK lords - not that he was alive at the time but he was the fellow who commanded the Maryland 400 and had his own following.

I walk along his namesake street a few times a week. Since Lord Stirling was born in New York, perhaps a better example would be General St. Clair, who was born in Scotland. But St. Clair was never a Lordship, his dad was a merchant.

However Lord Stirling, the New Yorker, traveled to London in the 1750s and claimed the title "Earl of Stirling" by birthright as senior male descendant and voted at least once with the Scottish peerage. The British House of Lords refused to recognize him. More power to us.
