The Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 both entered service with commercial carriers in 1957 or 1958; by 1961 I think that most flights of any length overwater were by jet, not prop.

Well I dont think we can really say that until we know of how many of those jets came off the lines in that time and to which carriers they went to.
They may have concentrated on Europe at first.
