I wish I could come up with something on the consolation side, but my gag reflex is still working overtime at the alternatives to Fred.
McCain and Huckabee aren't even on the "alternatives" list, though.
Now that I think of it, got an extra glass?
The base of "Constitutional Conservatives" is indeed shrinking.
Many factors add into that, with "public disinformation schooling" being close to the top.
George Washington warned us at length in his farewell address 212 years ago about political parties. That warning went unheeded and here we are.
Our Declaration of Independence gives us the right/responsibility to change the way we are governed, but alas I fear we have passed the point where that is going to happen either.
Not all together "happy thoughts".
All we can do is stick by our principles, do our best, and trust in God!
As far as politics ... the jury is still out on that for me, but see my tag line!
"Conservative Base" and "Economy" and "Red State" are all content-free nebulous constructs like, "Community" and "Environment" and "Booger."
The best anyone can point to is the "Reagan 'Landslide'" which was:
1980- 51% to 41%
1984- 59% to 40%
The type of people who voted for Mondale and Carter (after the malaise for crying out loud) have not changed. Half of them have been for Fidel Castro and Stalin since 1976.
Reagan was able to solidify his "social conservative base," though he never did anything to stop abortion and he actually signed amnesty for illegals.
And he was able to sway union-thug anti-trade "Reagan Democrats" to his side to put him over the top.
Fred and Duncan indicate to me that the social conservatives can no longer be counted on to even show up.
The Reagan-Democrats? There's only one or two of those left alive. Is Zell Miller still alive?
So if you're a GOP condidate, what do you do?
Hillary/Obama have the solid, 40% Carter/Mondale menace locked up to start with, and all they have to do is add a few percent of idiot-independents, and we're right back to 1992 again.
SOLUTIONS
I'm not just painting in black. I also have solutions.
As I said on another thread, all of the Scottish Distilleries are in full production as of today. That means that supplies are guaranteed 12 years into the future, so even through 8 years of Hillary and 4 years of the "third term" VP, we can stay soused in the finest style.
Oh Anna. Certainly you have other things to worry about. Politics are important but not to be miserable like this. Life has many other things to worry about. I find politics important but I refuse to let it rule my life. In fact, I always look to the positive and see who will come out of this mess instead of looking back at who left. Go on vacation somewhere warm and let the politics behind for awhile. I can’t ever remember being depressed about politics. Even when Santorum was beat by Casey in Pennsylania, I knew it would be ok because now Casey does nothing. He has little to no power that Santorum did. Plus Santorum has an even more important role for conservatives. I would imagine that God has other plans for Fred and they might even be more beneficial to us...we just don’t know yet.
Kirk in Washington
EDWIN J. FEULNER JR.
RUSSELL KIRK, "The Wizard of Mecosta," seemed an ill-suited visitor to Washington when he first came to the Heritage Foundation in 1978. Then sixty years old, he was not a newcomer to the capital, and yet he was certainly not a part of this transient, political place. Both Russell and his wife, Annette, enjoyed telling the story of his meeting with President Nixon in the Oval Office on April 4, 1972.
Unperturbed by the demonstrators in the streets, Mr. Nixon was leisurely in manner, assured, cordial. The President seated himself on a sofa by Kirk's chair and asked, "Where do Presidents obtain their support when unpopular decisions have to be made, Dr. Kirk? What might be done--not just today, but in the long run--to revive America's spirits and old national character? Dr. Kirk, have we any hope?"
"That depends upon public belief, Mr. President," Kirk replied. "Despair feeds upon despair, hope upon hope. If most people believe the prophets of despair, they will seek out private hidey-holes and cease to cooperate for the common good. But if most people say, 'We are in a bad way, but we still have the resources and the intelligence and the will to work a renewal'--why, they will be roused by the exigency to common action and reform. It is all a matter of belief."
I supported Fred a couple of months BEFORE he even announced, as evidenced by my old tag line.
But I was disappointed in his strategy, almost from day one. He seemed to play hard to get for so long that when he finally surfaced it was anticlimactic.
How many times did he turn down interviews with O’Reilly? Something like 20-30 times (per B.O.)?? It made no sense. He blew free air time on the #1 news show, over and over.
Number One Rule - NEVER turn down free air time.
Fred, you let me down.
When Fred dropped out, I dropped out. I can’t compromise with a counterfeit choice. I feel like I’m in a canoe without a paddle. Beer time.
I’m still voting for FRed. I don’t care.
What’s this about Duncan Hunter handing over all of his delegates to Huckleberry Hound?
Since you pinged me, I’m still depressed over my candidate Duncan Hunter dropping out. Not that I was surprised, but I’m rather pissed at the media (including the allegedly conservative Fox News Channel) who will manipulate the voters will polls and focus groups and pundits, and eventually shut out a great conservative voice from the debates. Screw the kingmakers.
Alan Keyes, who I proudly voted for in ‘96 and ‘00, is the man who will get my vote now without any hesistation on my part.
Oh my dear Anna, you are NOT alone. I was wiping away the tears removing my bumperstickers yesterday. I am depressed over it.
Though I am sure Fred is in a difficult place right now with a sick Mama and all, I was hoping he’d screw the media one last time and pull off another great speech explaining true conservatism to the voters, even if the only bit they would ever quote would be his last 3 words (”I am leaving”).
I am trying to learn more about Romney, with a very, very heavy heart.
For the first time in forever for me, I was actually excited about a candidate, not just preferring one to another. It made a difference. But the voters prefer someone who really desperately NEEDS to be the Leader. They love the shiny cross, the good hair, the years spent in torture.
Reality Show Election.
You've got a point. I hope Romney isn't sucked into Mexican-ruling-class worship...
I cried, too. When my hubby came home from work yesterday, he took one look at me and said, “I’m sorry, honey.” and gave me a big hug. He knows I am a big FredHead. (See? I cannot bring myself to speak of it in past terms, yet.)
Now I am eating a piece of chocolate cake. It is verrrry yummy and easing my pain a teensy bit. I will need much more, as it goes very deep.
I’m afraid I’m going to get fat. ;^)
Well, if you put it that way...
Look, I’m a FredHead for sure, but you’re not going to see me sulk like some DU-er with a case of the dangling chads.
I’ve stated already that I’m probably not going to vote for a RINO just because there’s an R beside their name in November, but I’m not going to mope around like someone stole my candy. I suggest the same for you.
Fred just came in too late, and without enough gusto.
Much as I like Fred, wouldn't it be better in the long run to find someone younger for VP?
But, really... just what the hell is going on?!
And, oh... regarding your bottle offer earlier, thank you, and, yes, the extra glass is yours. Bottoms up!
You didn't console or inspire me, but you did make me LOL.
= )
You guys are all crying over a globalist and McCain twin.
