It’s an idea that sells books when blown out of proportion. It’s not going to happen as envisioned; if it’s going to happen at all, it’s going to be in the form of an economic free trade zone.
The merging my country with Mexico elicits a visceral yucky feeling in me. I would take up arms to prevent it. But a merging with Canada? Not so much.
Their culture and values mostly mirror ours, and they are small in numbers.
We could take them, easy.
It's not like they are mostly bums and criminals living in a corrupt, racist system, like some other border countries I can think of.
At a certain point it can be hard to distinguish between a free trade zone and a fully merged country. I love reading articles debunking the NAU (which is easy to do since there is no grand dark reptilian alien conspiracy) that are written by WSJ types. Because when you read closely you realize that even while debunking the conspiracy claim they voice approval of virtually every aspect of the “NAU” expect perhaps a political union.
