Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.

Calm down. I have no ill-will towards Romney. I just don’t find him anything to get excited about.

I am not even sure how we got started on Romney except as a retort to FDT’s prolife record.

I really don’t think about him or post about him. This is the first thread where I have ever posted anything about him.

FDT is my candidate (he will be announcing). Romney is yours.

But, and his is a big ‘But’, notice that this is a thread about FDT?

I never wander over to Romney threads and attack others for not seeing my candidate as the only candidate.

That’s the difference.

If you like Romney and think he’s a rock star, then by all means have a festival thread in his honor.

Why are you here?

I am not in Romney threads. I am in FDT threads. I belong here.

The man sounds like a small government conservative.

Well, this may not be acceptable to some pontificating on this thread, but in an odd way Fred is correct again ... so long as there is any place a woman wanting an abortion can go to have one, legal or illegal, she is the one who must make the decision ultimately.

Law confirming the personhood of an alive unborn child can be written to stop a huge percentage of abortions, but ultimately the concept of self defense so deeply ingrained in Western Law will force some legal abortions to be allowed, until the entire pregnancy can be maintained ex utero in an artifical environment. Then, I suppose the issue will be moot and killing an alive unborn will be outlawable.

I was here to compare Romney’s pro-choice past, and pro-life record, with Thompson’s pro-choice past, and pro-life record. I’m not attacking you for failing to see Romney’s greatness. I think it’s perfectly possible for people to prefer Thompson to Romney. I don’t, in fact, unlike some Giuliani and Thompson supporters, believe that Romney is the only candidate someone could sanely support. And I have no issue with you finding Romney “stale” and “unexciting”. You don’t have to, because I’m sure you’ll support him when he’s the nominee (as I’ll support Thompson if he becomes the nominee). Romney’s stalwart supporters are excited enough for everyone. What I’m taking issue with is what I thought was a characterization of Romney’s supporters as some sort of brainwashed, stereotypical, presumably Mormon (judging by the BYU comment), neophytes. But I can see you didn’t really mean any harm.

I personally could care less, but don’t kid yourself that the media and Leno/Letterman aren’t going to have a field day with that if he gets the nomination.

All candidates have the problem that Leno and Letterman are going to make jokes about them - the question is what jokes ans how badly will they hurt

Rudy wears dresses.

McCain is older than gravel.

Romney hunts bunnies without a gun or hunting licence hunting licence or gun. (removing ambiguity)

Fred's wife is hot.

I think the woman ought to have a say. Also, since the child’s very life is in question, the child should also get a say, at a two to one margin.

Because the child cannot affirmatively speak out, specifically saying he or she wants to live, we need to ascertain whether he chooses life in some other way.

I suggest this: If the child is taking in nutrients and using them to grow, and if the child chooses to allow its heart to beat, then I think we can safely say the child has not voted to die, but to live. It’s only fair, after all.

So, every child with a beating heart, de facto, has voted 2 to 1 against any mother’s supposed choice to kill it, and has, inexplicably, chosen to live.

End of discussion.

Leno and Letterman can’t hold a candle as to what Trey and Matt do to political people on both sides of the isle. Mainly they trash the left, look at what they did to expose Hillary and Gore! haha.

Did you have a meeting at your secret squirrel hideout and decide this would be the thread where you’d stake your attack on fred?

Now, flashbunny, you must not be wide awake because you know that Rudy supporters don't 'attack' other candidates. They only support good ol' Rudy and occasionally make comments on the views of other candidates. You should be more sensitive to their feelings, it's a tough job supporting a liberal on a conservative website. :P

No, No, No. It’s excellent on its face. The truth won’t hurt Fred at all. Nobody but news junkies and supporters of others will care what a candidate said YEARS ago and that applies to Guiliani as well.

The question is, or should be, whether a candidate still agrees with the earlier viewpoints and actions. I have seen nothing to indicate that Rudy Giuliani has repudiated his earlier words and deeds, unlike Fred Thompson, who has.
