Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.

Honest. Right.

He was against the PBA ban, now he says he would sign it.

He was against the flat tax, then last week he was for it to get Forbes’ endorsement, now he is against it again.

“What changed things...repeating famously Castro phrases to South Florida Cubans?”

I have no idea. But I watched an interview of him sometime in late February I believe, where he admitted that he’d written most of his speeches up to that point, but was looking into getting speechwriters (no reason given). He was a valedictorian English major in college, so I imagine he thought he could get away with something like that. But at this level, speech writing has to do with an awful lot more then being able to string sentences together in a tidy way. And gaffes like that highlight this. It really should be handled, at least partly, by professionals.

You must be running really scared with your pathtic non-stop attacks on Thompson who hasn’t announced he’s running. When he does, kiss rudy’s @ss goodbye!

The one about Thompson endorsing McCain almost gave me a heart attack before I figured out it was an old article. :)

Definitely. Dealing effectively with words takes experience, time and great care. Even a candidate with great writing skills of their own doesn’t have enough hours in the day to do even a fraction of it.

Rudy could not be more pro-abortion unless he performed them with his own hands.

He probably did, dressing in woman's clothes all time. He's got a nurse outfit in his closet somewhere.

I enjoyed that. An exchange with you that didn’t involve hostility. Given that I’m supporting a candidate you despise, we’re bound to disagree an awful lot. But I’d guess we’ll be on the same side more often then it sometimes seems. Good to be reminded of that.

We did not have a big government agency when abortion was illegal prior to RoevWade. Abortionists were criminals in those days. LOL! The mothers were not arrested - The abortionists were arrested.

never attack other candidates for their positions

Dear Mr. Pot Kettle Black,

I'm not from Massachusetts and I'm not particularly proud (except of my children). So, so far, you've gotten pretty much everything wrong (about me...and Mitt). Like I said, your right to be wrong. Carry on with your non-attack of other candidates! LOL.

Okay, Utah then? the mystery is killin’ us!

your = you’re

So, so far <——redundant

Fred had a nearly perfect pro-life voting record in the Senate while Rudy received more money from NARAL in 1999 than Hillary Clinton.

But, if you really cared about the issue, you wouldn't be supporting RINO Rudy to begin with.

YOUR right is possessive actually.

You're = you are. And I was definitely NOT saying that you are right. I was saying it is YOUR right (belonging to you) to be wrong.

YOU'RE wrong again PKB, I guess.

Stop while YOU'RE ahead. LOL.

On the NRLC website, they archive their congressional ratings back to 1997, so they include six of his eight years in the Senate. Thompson took the pro-life position on every vote he cast on the abortion issue. The only reason he didn’t have a 100% rating is that, as Jim pointed out, the ratings also include votes on campaign finance reform, which he supported.

Even in 1994, THOMPSON BELIEVED ROE SHOULD BE OVERTURNED:

Fred Thompson’s Pro-life Position Examined

In 1994, Fred Thompson ran as a candidate who believed states should make decisions regarding abortion, opposing Roe and he believed abortion should be prohibited or restricted in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. His eight year voting record shows he was in complete agreement with pro-life groups on abortion funding, late-term abortions and judges. Over the course of 11 years, Fred Thompson now considers himself pro-life without any nuance to the position, meaning at some point he shifted to the right on first-trimester abortions.

Places for $500.

A. This one lives in a blue state, thinks Romney is a rock star and claims to not live in Massachusetts.

Q. What is a transplant to California from Massachusetts that attended BYU? :)

Guiliani already has the baby killer vote locked up.

If he cons his way through the primaries, the pro-abortion folks are still going to vote for the Rat.

I bet any money NARAL will attack Rudy for not being "anti-choice" enough...

You can't win with the Left, which is why I always shake my head in disgust when I see Republicans run on liberal issues.

Predictable. I live in a blue state (NJ), never attended anything like BYU (in fact, I’m embarrassed to admit this, but prior to learning of Romney I would throw away pamphlets I received from Mormons due to the “weirdness” factor), and I think Romney is a rock star. If you feel the need to pigeonhole Romney supporters, then by all means go ahead. But don’t be surprised when your pigeonholing doesn’t jive with reality.
