There is no scientific evidence to prove ANYONE much less 7 million people have ADD.

There is no scientific proof that God exists, but he does, right?

Will you stop beating me for wearing a dress?

Now that I see things more clearly, I will stop.

lol, what leads to suspect I just have a 'feeling'?

Here's a start:
http://amenclinics.com/bp/atlas/ch12.php

I've done a lot of reading about this condition and it often isn't even a 'disorder' as people claim it to be, there are a lot of advantages ADD persons have in certain ares...

Often? Which means sometimes is is a disorder?

there are a lot of advantages ADD persons have in certain ares

ONLY if they choose to use those advantages. If you ask someone who has it, they would not call ADD itself an advantage.

Many people diagnosed as ADD are merely different than the fictitious "norm." Many are right-brain dominant.

I always knew there was something wrong with lefties.

I said 'Often' because depending on the degree and manifestation of it, it can be very dehibilitating and harder to find 'advantages'. It is a spectrum. And yea, people with ADD need to put themselves in situations where their creativity, inginuity, boldness, hyperfocus and hypersocialibility (typical traits) can be used positively. And, btw, I have ADD and do call it an advantage. :)

OK, I thought from your post you were doubting it exists. My bad.

I think we're seeing an epidemic of learning disorders in kids but. Although I do believe actually ADD/ADHD exist I believe it is not as common as many think including the doctors who are misdiagnosing it on a massive scale. I do not think most of it is ADD/ADHD nor can the more likely problem be diagnosed by anyone in the mental health field.

There is a highly similar group of disorders that can produce ADD/ADHD type behavioral and learning issues but is not ADD/ADHD nor can it be treated with such drugs as Ritalin. Central Auditory {Visual} Processing Disorders are very real and have been proven to exist by Audiologist and Vestibular Researchers. Audiologist can not prescribe any medications. Here's a few links.

Or to better understand what is going on this article helps also. COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF VESTIBULAR DISORDERS

The behavioral aspects in this are triggered by audio and visual environment. The epidemic is born of largely the technology boom. The disorders have been there but did not really cause issues until our newer technology got to the point of being on the edge of what many kids and adults can handle. It is also a major cause of Adult Panic Attacks or General Anxiety Disorder and it gets overlooked. Unfortunately the underlying cause {Vestibular Disorders} gets overlooked by shrinks and many GP's and the wrong treatment protocols began with SSRI's making the patients condition worse.

I've heard that people who have taken Ritalin as kids aren't allowed into the military. Has anyone else heard that?

Currently as long as you are off of it for one full year, you can join.

My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago. When she was put on the meds she became an honor roll child.

This year she decided she didn't want to take the meds. She is failing 3 out of 7 classes. She was playing football (co-ed team), she watches maybe 3 hours of tv per week...the rest of the time she is out playing with friends and doing chores.

Her condition is real...and would not be cured by more exercise. (or as was suggested upthread, by beatings)

I have read of Dr. Baughman recently. I'm currently reading a book by David. B. Stein, Ph.D., titled Unraveling the ADD/ADHD Fiasco, and I read his other book Ritalin is Not the Answer. He references Dr. Baughman's work, and Dr. Baughman has a testimonial for Stein's work on his website, www.drdavestein.com

My boys are just 2 and 4, but I can foresee the day when they are in school, the school will likely want to diagnose them as ADHD, but to me, they seem to be typical boys. I don't like the idea of putting medications into my boys just to control them! That's why I picked up Stein's books, he has a non-medication program called the Caregivers' Skills Program. Have you heard of it? I am trying to find out if anyone else has used it...but if my boys were ever diagnosed, I'd use his program before I'd give them thosemedications. I read on Stein's site that the FDA is considering putting "black box" warnings on the bottles. That is scary to me!

If it isn't a poison, why can it cause strokes and heart problems? Another med causes liver disease. Go to www.drdavestein.com and read his "recommended reading" page...the FDA is considering putting black box warnings on the meds. They wouldn't consider doing that if the meds were benign!

Even the APA says that ADD/ADHD is not a disease. It may be real, but being real doesn't make it a disease.

Interesting. My wife was diagnosed with ADHD as well as my son in the last year. While neither are on Ritalin, they are on different drugs and we have all seen a significant improvement in the ability to focus and maintain control within their lives.

ADHD is real. The drugs help. I didn't believe before but I do now.

Ritalin and other drugs are mind-altering and will affect the behavior of ANYONE WHO TAKES THEM. Do not mistake this as proof that a condition actually exists.
