I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago.

Islamofascism

It's a new word (called a "coinage") with its own meaning.

With all due respect to those who object to the word Islamofascism and its cognates because Islamic terrorists aren't fascists — well, calling them Islamofascists doesn't mean we think they're fascists (rightly or wrongly), any more than saying we have "coined" a word means that we claim to have made round metallic money out of it.

Islamofascism is a brand new word with its own meaning: hostility, intimidation, aggression, violence, and oppression in the cause of the dominance and spread of Islam.

Get it?

Islamic terrorists aren't fascists

No, they aren't, and calling them that does not make them so.

Words are the tools by which humans can understand ideas with precision. Sloppy terminology leads to sloppy thinking.

The term is an emotional appeal which attempts to garner support for the current fight by harkening back to the imagery of World War II. But the current clash between Western Culture and Islamic Jihad bears little resemblance to the Second World War.

Use of that term obfuscates the many differences, and thus hampers the war effort.
