Woo hoo! I have 3 WUs done, and a big one finishing tomorrow. I didn't think I'd ever get past "1 WU completed."

I didn't think I'd ever get past "1 WU completed." I know how you feel, I didn't realize how slow my PC is. I have completed 2 WUs in the time my son's PC has completed 6. I guess I shouldn't be upset, I did't buy it for heavy gaming or multimedia. It's mainly a word proc, spreadsheet and web browsing machine.

My PC is aged--I'm not sure how it's liking me leaving it on for days [to complete this eternal Tinker core WU]. It's not accustomed to being left on. My good fortune is that I have an iMac G4 laptop on at work, locked in my desk. I see this morning from our folding page that it's completed a small WU overnight that it began yesterday. I just hope that it hasn't been given a new monster WU. Whatever!

I'm not sure how it's liking me leaving it on for days When taking my computer repair classes, my instructor taught us that the damage comes from turning the computer on and off. The surge of power is very destructive to the 'puter. Think of a light bulb. When does it fail? When you first turn it on and the rush of electricity frys the filament. Same concept in a computer.
Many geeks and many large corporations leave the 'puter on for that reason. Of course they pay more for electricity if you leave it on, but that is insignificant compared to the cost of the equipment.
I've always left my 'puter on 24x7 and just power down the monitor to save on electricity.

Thanks for the info--makes me feel better about leaving it on. I've been turning off the monitor during the work day, so I guess I'm doing things right. I've also been disabling my internet connection for security reasons.

I've always left my 'puter on 24x7Same here. The only time it gets turned off is when our elec. goes off. (which happens frequently with our company)

Interesting...it gave my laptop the same work unit to do again. It's p2305 mutant. That's good-- it will go quickly.

Every contribution is valuable - work that might otherwise not be done, or done much more slowly. Besides, who's to say which unit will have the key to some major breakthrough? Maybe it's yours, in which case, even if that one golden unit is the only one you've ever done, who cares? ;)

That way, if something happens - your power goes out, for example :) - it won't have to start all over from the beginning. You were dead spot on, on that. I went to bed last night and I was at 102 frames. I woke up this morning to see my 8th unit posted and my computer was OFF. I almost fainted. I called out the Lord's name a couple of times when I saw that. After the panic left I just hit the red cog, I think, I was so upset I don't know what I did. Anyhow, It started back on no. 134 frame. I didn't lose it. Thank you, thank you.
