That's nice - really - but I tend for the Gipper angle. Says it all.
170 folders...WU-hoooo!!! Fantastic progress, how soon before we're in the top 500?
There are 10 kinds of DUers, those that understand binary and those that don't.
If we leveled off at our current rate of production:
1 day to 700
6 days to 600
10 days to 500
17 days to 400
Well, apparently I'm the klutz. I downloaded and installed folding@home. When it installed, I took all the defaults, and then put my FReeper name in as my userid, and put the group code in.
I still haven't progress to where it downloads a 'project' and works on it, and I left my computer on all night. It's still running. On the display page, it says:
Waiting for core: Step 37
then, at the bottom of the page, it says:
Requesting User ID from server
Under the log, here's what it says (0n the latest round, after I tried restarting):
Launch directory: C:\Program Files\Folding@Home
[07:35:30] - Ask before connecting: No
[07:35:30] - User name: Bush_Democrat (Team 36120)
[07:35:30] - User ID not found locally
[07:35:30] + Requesting User ID from server
[08:09:25] Opening http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=36120...
Are you running any kind of firewall program, ie, McAfee or Zonealarm?
Are you behind any kind of a proxy server?
What operating system. (XP especially, as there are some internet explorer security settings that can prevent downloads, and you won't even know it.
Either one of those can usually prevent downloads.
I'm not going to be on for much longer tonight, but if you can answer the above, there are lots on here that can help.
Actually, when I said that I was a klutz, I really meant it. I had tried restarting the folding@home program, and still had the problem. I totally re-booted my machine (and had to do a hard shutdown BTW) and finally it's going. I'm chugging now, and good to go. (hard to believe I work on computers all day, every day)
Thanks for your quick reply, and have a good evening.
Also, sometimes the stanford servers go down, and you may be stuck in a cycle, of trying to request a job from a server that is down.
At this point, unless you want to wait, the usual remedy is to uninstall the FAH client,
The gui client, click on the icon, select quit, and then from the start menu, select uninstall.
The console client, go to services, stop the service, set the properties to "disabled", and then delete the entire directory.
Download the client, and try again. If you get assigned to the same protein(same server), you might want to try one more time.
***** Anyone else have any more suggestions? *****
... other than reboot? :)
That's good info, because FAH does create temp files, but they're "normally" put into a folder, that programs like WW won't touch, but occasionally, a novice can accidentally install a program in a temp directory, where those files can get zapped, or cause problems.
My Father... is particularly bad about this. I went over one day, for a frantic call, he couldn't find his icons on the desktop. Yeah, no wonder, he had downloaded and installed a program to the \\user\desktop directory, and there were 3,800 icons and folders, and he had it set to auto-arrange. My computer, and Internet explorer, were like 7 drags of the mouse, to the right.
I'm personally disappointed. I would have thought we'd be at 500 or so by this point. :)
No problem. And has anyone mentioned to you lately, that that is really an intriguing screen name? :)
You might want to mention, that Laptops running at 100% cpu in an enclosed cab, make great space heaters... since this is wintertime, afterall... downplay that point, around march or so though.
Ok, did I miss the explanation as to why JR nixed the use of the name for the team?? It is a collection of Freepers banding together, and I think brings good PR to the site. Why would he nix it??
After my computer went off yesterday, I lost the 6th folder I was working on. With help from some fantastic people here, they got me back up and folding. Now, the problem is, I just completed my 1st unit since being back up. I went to the stats and my name and finished unit is not showing up. My old one is, pbrown---5 is there but not the one just completed. Will we get credit for that unit?
IMO, it had more to do with the way he was approached than the request, although he made it clear that he won't be adding any FR servers to fold during the slow times. I don't think that Jim officially sanctions very much of all the activity that goes on here.
We have decided to leave well enough alone. We meet and greet here on FR, since that is where we all, well, met and gret!?
Hey, there is no sense in tweaking the king. We fold, everyone wins. We crush and humiliate DU, everyone is happy.
The Stanford site, doesn't show completed workunits, until sometime around 25 minutes past the hour, and only updates once per hour.
sometimes, when the stat server is really busy, some of those updates get postponed until the next hourly update.
Patience !!!! :)
