Recently the 2000th American soldier died in Iraq, and the anti-war left held 'vigils' all across the country. I was troubled by this for a few reasons, first, since when is holding signs and yelling a vigil, and second, their favorite slogan, "2000, how many more" is ridiculous. I dont know where these protestors got the idea that they represent the troops. I say to them, "2000, how many more lies?"
If you want to know what the troops really think, listen to the words of Corporal Jeff B. Starr, USMC who wrote this in a letter incase of his death...
"I don't regret going [To Iraq], everybody dies but few get to do it for something as important as freedom. It may seem confusing why we are in Iraq, it's not to me. I'm here helping these people, so that they can live the way we live. Not have to worry about tyrants or vicious dictators. To do what they want with their lives. To me that is why I died. Others have died for my freedom, now this is my mark."
These are the words of a hero, a man who needs to be honored. Corporal Jeffery Starr saw the mission, he knew why he was there, and the best way to honor him and the sacrifice of those who have made the same honorable sacrifice as Corporal Starr need to honored, honored by completing the mission.
The new fad on the left is to call for an "Immediate pullout" For a minute, lets say hypothetically we do pull out. All Americans and Coaltion troops pull out within the next three to six months (As called for by Rep. John Murtha, and backed by Sen. Ted Kennedy.) We simply turn around and head for Kuwait. This would create a vacuum that would be filled by Islamic Fundamentalists who seek to establish another Afghanistan. Iraq would become another Iran. A haven for terrorists, and the new government would be a sitting duck.
That is the option the anti-war left presents. Now, lets take a look at what will happen if we continue on our current course. Iraq is having elections in the coming week, to elect a permanent government, which will make it a permanent Democracy. Protestors and Senate Democrats say there is no clear path to victory in Iraq. Maybe this is becuase they have trouble identifying what a victory is. To the anti-war left, which includes most Senate Democrats (at least now it does...) anything that helps the poll numbers of President Bush is not a victory. If Bush looks bad, it is good. The Victory is in sight, once Iraq establishes a permanent democracy, we are one crucial step closer to victory. A soverign Iraq that can defend itself from inside and outside threats is a victory. This is what we are marching towards.
Another troubling thing is the Senate Democrats who were all too happy to jump on the Pro-War bandwagon back when it was popular, but now have jumped off the wagon and taken an axe to its wheels. Take for example the man who Democrats now rally behind has a leader of the anti-war movement
"There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein's regime is a serious danger, that he is a tyrant, and that his pursuit of lethal weapons of mass destruction cannot be tolerated. He must be disarmed."
That was in 2002, now lets see what the Senator says today...
"Instead of providing open and honest answers about how we will achieve success in Iraq and allow our troops to begin to come home,' Kennedy said, 'the president reverted to the same manipulation of facts to justify a war we never should have fought."
Quite interesting, coming from someone who said he should not be disarmed, but now says it was a war we never should have fought. How were we supposed to disarm him? With angry letters from the UN? Mr. Kennedy and many other Democrats are too busy trying to hit the President to realize that they are politicizing the deaths of American soldiers. Something I find utterly disgusting.
There is one senate Democrat who gets it, he sees what President Bush, and his party see, this Senator is Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut who was picked by Democrats in 2000 to be their Vice Presidential candidate. He went to Iraq over the Thanksgiving recess, and here is what he has to say in an article published in the Wall Street Journal titled Our troops must stay
"I have just returned from my fourth trip to Iraq in the last 17 months and can report real progress there. More work needs to be done, of course, but the Iraqi people are in reach of a watershed transformation from the primitive, killing tyranny of Saddam to modern, self-governing, self-securing nationhood unless the great American military that has given them and us this unexpected opportunity is prematurely withdrawn."
The Senator goes on to say...
"Here is an ironic finding I brought back from Iraq. While public opinion polls in the U.S. show serious declines in support for the war and increasing pessimism about how it will end, polls conducted by Iraqis for Iraqi universities show increasing optimism. Two-thirds say they are better off than they were under Saddam and a resounding 82% are confident their lives in Iraq will be better a year from now than they are today. What a colossal mistake it would be for Americas bipartisan political leadership to choose this moment in history to lose its will, and in the famous phrase, to seize defeat from the jaws of the coming victory."
Mr. Lieberman is correct, to withdraw now, in other words, give up, would be not only a colosal mistake, it would be a spit in the face to all those who have sacraficed in this war, and is the worst possible way to honor those who have died. To withdraw now will dishonor those who have died, we will abandon the Iraqi's to certain civil war, we will have let down the dreams of 27 million people. This nation was founded on the idea that freedom is for everyone, we brought freedom to France, Germany and the rest of Europe. To the soviet bloc in eastern europe, to the people of Korea, to the People of Kuwait, the people of Afghanistan, and now we are bringing it to Iraq. To withdraw from Iraq now would be one of the most selfish acts in American history, and would also be one of the biggest mistakes. I suggest that it it more wise to listen to the leaders of our military, and the people of Iraq, than to listen to people like the followers of Cindy Sheehan who used the 2000th death in Iraq as propaganda and a card to play, rather than a solemn reminder of the sacrifice that was comitted, and to keep our heads up and march towards certain victory.

60,000 Chinese die in Coal Mine accidents every year.
These "citizens of the world" should go over there and demand safer coal mines in China. That would kill two birds with one stone.

I sent this letter to the same people I did last month.
I recieve a call from my local paper about 3-4 hours after I sent the e-mail to the editor.
They do that to confirm that I am who I say that I am.
I don't know if they will print it, but atleast they know that a real, concerned citizen sent it to them.
Keep up the great work.
