She donated $1000 in '88 when Gore was a conservative Dem and still basically pro-life. Dems ran Texas back then, so it's not too shocking. She has donated far more to Republicans and also gave money to pro-life groups.

To be perfectly honest with you, I was pretty tee'd off this morning. Of course, I was dealing with my truck tranny acting up also, so I wasn't in a good mood to begin with.

I've since put my brain in gear and although I'm not dancing in the street over her, I do respect President Bush and maybe more VP Cheney. And Cheney sounded pretty sure on Rush that Ms. Miers was A'OK.

So I'll trust the men I helped elect to do the right thing. And I'll roast them first time she sides with Ginsberg.

The prez has three years to go. I'm thinking Stevens and Ginsberg.

Neither look to healthy.... but that never stopped a SC judge from hanging around till their last breath.

And her pastor has stated that she holds an originalist viewpoint.

I could swear I read that as "holds an organist's viewpoint." Guess a pastor would notice something like that. :-)

didn't Jimmah Cartah claim that he was likewise a born-again Christian?

And if I remember correctly, at one time, Larry Flynt claimed the very same thing.

If Stevens croaks, Bush could nominate that famous liberal, Al Gonzales. The effect would be a net positve for the conservative movement, but we will still freak out here at FR. It's what we do.

Great post, nwrep. But hey, I just heard from another FReeper on another thread that this woman is basically a lunatic lefty and he/she has been informing everyone of that "fact". ROFL! Now isn't that just something. Even within the lofty gates of Free Republic, we have so-called Republicans fighting amongst each other. Some came out early to damn the woman, some came to praise her, and some (like me) are choosing to learn more before making a judgement call (excuse the pun). LOL

I believe President Bush deserves a better response from us. I'm not for her, and I'm certainly not against her. Good grief, aren't you just miffed as all can be, that some folks are freekin' out?

I looked at her church's message page.

Why do FReepers think they are fundamentalist?

At the very least, wouldn't you think that fellow Republicans would at least take the time to learn more before going off half-cocked?

No, not "must," but the question should be asked.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard all day.

Wasn't Bill Clinton a member of a conservative born-again baptist congregation?

He sure knew how to tote around a BIG bible for photo ops. Ron Brown's funeral comes to mind, when his aw shucks grin turned to crocodile tears for the cameras.

Emerging evidence points to the fact that Ms. Miers actually "walks the walk," even when cameras aren't trained on her and she has nothing to gain by her actions but the satisfaction of doing the Lord's work.

Regarding Ms. Miers' sexual orientation... see: http://www.mcculloughsite.net/stingray/archives/2005/10/03/harriet_miers_signs_that_she_is_prolife.php ... there SCTEX Justice Nathan Hecht comments that they "dated" over the years. He also confirms that fact that she is pro-life.

"'if she is truly a born-again Christian, that is enough for me.'

I dunno. There are some born-again Christians I wouldn't nominate to anything. Check out the FR religion threads."

Well-said. In my own experience, some of the absolute WORST hypocrites I've met were 'born-again' Christians who wore that on their sleeve like a badge of honor while talking down everyone else in sight (like my ex did, for example).

The folks who pretend - or are deluded - into believing that they have a sole hotline to the Almighty on judging the status of other people's salvation worry me. Not as much as the commies do, but they do.

One example? Jimmuh "Ah'lNevuhLieToYou" Carter comes to mind.

Put another way - actions speak louder than words. That's why nominating someone without a paper trail is a real crapshoot, given that the record of GOP nominees betraying the man who nominated them is probably 50% over the past 50 years, while the left's nominees are batting 1.000 in the faithfulness to Karl Marx category....

Well, there was this slackard by the name of Rehnquist...

LOL! I have heard that argument about Miers not having judicial experience all day long. Those same people honored and mourned the passing of the Honorable William Rehnquist.
